Job Description


This semi-skilled position is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the Great Falls Public Library building and grounds. The Library Custodian II will lead the Librarys custodial staff in ensuring a clean, safe and well-maintained building and is responsible for keeping the department running smoothly and effectively in conjunction with other departments. Work is performed under the general direction of Library Director. 1. Keeps the Library and Library grounds clean and well maintained. (75%)
  • Ensures building cleaning services, including floor sweeping and waxing; dusting and polishing furniture; washing windows and walls; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; and cleaning restrooms.
  • Promptly responds to urgent cleaning tasks.
  • Performs minor building maintenance repairs, including changing light bulbs; conducting minor electrical repairs; oiling heater motors and pumps; and other similar activities.
  • Oversees snow removal, lawn care and flower bed maintenance.
  • Conducts boiler maintenance by performing cleaning of equipment and monitoring and recording water levels to ensure proper, safe performance.
  • Maintains safety of building ensuring it is free of hazards to staff, patrons, and vendors.
  • Organizes and secures all cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Informs director and staff of any specific maintenance issues in need of attention.
  • Coordinates with the Administrative Assistant to purchase all necessary supplies and equipment within building budget limits.
  • Coordinates with Library vendors and inspectors (elevator maintenance, elevator inspections, boiler inspections, fire extinguisher tests) to ensure that the Library is safe and that all appropriate local and state requirements are met.
  • Communicates with Director regarding any maintenance or building issues in need of attention.

2. Assists in the day-to-day functioning of the Library (10%)

  • Delivers materials, packages and donations to appropriate staff and departments
  • In cooperation with other staff, empties book drops as needed.
  • Assists and/or performs opening and closing procedures of the building.
  • Attends Library meetings as requested by management.

3. Works with Library Staff and City Shop to coordinate the maintenance of Library vehicles and equipment. (5%)

4. Contributes to making the Great Falls Public Library environment a welcoming, safe and inviting place (10%)

  • Enforces Great Falls Public Library policies (including behavior policies)
  • Monitors Library for safety hazards. Reports and provides plans to remedy such hazards.
  • Arranges and performs setup of chairs, tables and other equipment for various meetings
  • Arranges and moves Library furniture as needed
  • Assists with displays as needed
  • Provides assistance with inspections and emergency procedures as needed.

5. Participates in the professional development of self and others. Participates in committees and professional organizations as appropriate.

6. Miscellaneous other duties as assigned

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in building cleaning and maintenance desirable.
  • Supervisory experience desirable.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Montana low pressure boilers license or ability to obtain one within one year.
  • Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana drivers license
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in building cleaning and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of the use of basic hand tools.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision during closed hours and ability to make sound decisions, exercise independent judgment and complete work tasks within the work day.
  • Ability to maintain boilers, hot water heaters, energy efficient furnaces, and related equipment desired.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for storage, usage, handling and disposal of potentially hazardous waste and cleaning materials.
  • Knowledge of the librarys policies, procedures and practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

SUPERVISION
Supervises a small group of workers. This position trains and supports departmental employees so that they, in turn, are empowered to be responsible and capable of independently managing their own work with a minimal supervision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at the library. Exposure to chemicals used for cleaning, noise, cold, heat, and wind is frequent.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate cleaning equipment, basic hand tools and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically Monday through Friday, day shift. This position is a non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.

TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
