University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy is looking for a Cook. The Cook plans, prepares, and cooks food items to ensure the highest quality service and experience for customers. They help keep the kitchen organized and running efficiently. They ensure proper food handling, sanitation and following food storage procedures. This is a full-time, hourly, August through May position entitled to University insurance, retirement and time off benefits. The University is located in St. Louis in the middle of the Washington University medical campus near public transportation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Follow recipes, including measuring, weighing and mixing ingredients
Bake, roast, grill, steam and boil meats, vegetables, fish, poultry and other foods
Wash, peel, cut, and seed fruits and vegetables to prepare for consumption
Ensure ingredients and final products are fresh
Portion, arrange, garnish and present final dishes
Serve food to guests
Maintain a clean and safe work area, including handling utensils, equipment and dishes
Handle and store ingredients and food
Maintain food safety and sanitation standards
Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment and utensils
Execute opening and closing procedures
Set up workstations with required ingredients and equipment
Check the quality and freshness of ingredients
Monitor station inventory levels
Accommodate guests' special requests
Operate kitchen equipment such as broilers, ovens, grills and fryers
Substitute for or assist other cooks as needed
Other duties as assigned by Management
Qualifications
Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED. Significant cooking experience can be considered in lieu of degree.
One (1) year of experience as a cook
Previous experience in foodservice/food preparation
Ability to use various knives for trimming, prepping, or chopping meats and vegetables necessary for recipes.
Be innovative, creative and focused on quality
Be customer-service driven
Experience working in an institutional and/or contracted food service operation or similar industry preferred.
Proven ability to manage and maintain multiple priorities and multitask
Manage details for multiple orders accurately and efficiently
Work effectively in a typical food service environment which may include loud noises, fast paced, large numbers of people, high volume activity, etc.
Must have an understanding of Food Safety and Sanitation as it applies to preparing foods, serving foods and keeping foods safe for consumption
