DESCRIPTION:

The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining and improving the exterior grounds of Bethany College, including athletic fields, track facilities, walkways, and landscaped areas. Duties involve lawn care, snow removal, chemical treatments, equipment maintenance, and support to other facilities departments as needed. This position ensures that campus grounds are safe, functional, and visually appealing for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is therefore eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Perform regular maintenance and enhancement of college grounds including mowing, trimming, weeding, and landscaping.
• Maintain athletic fields and track areas to ensure functionality, safety, and a professional appearance.
• Apply seed, fertilizer, and approved chemicals as directed, following safety procedures and environmental standards.
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entryways, and parking areas using hand tools or mechanized equipment.
• Sweep and clean sidewalks and outdoor common areas to maintain a tidy campus environment.
• Maintain and inventory landscaping tools and groundskeeping equipment; ensure proper use and routine care.
• Operate a variety of groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and tractors.
• Support other Facilities Services departments with general maintenance tasks or event preparation, as needed.
• Complete other duties as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor or Facilities Management.

FLSA COMPLIANCE AND TIMEKEEPING:

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). All hours worked must be reported accurately and approved by a supervisor. Employees in this role are eligible for overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a standard workweek. Time worked before or after scheduled hours, during breaks, or on weekends/holidays must be pre-approved and compensated in accordance with FLSA and institutional policy.

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Driver's License
• High school diploma or equivalent (or currently pursuing with anticipated completion date)
• Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with colleagues, students, and visitors
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Lawn care or groundskeeping experience preferred
• Attention to detail and commitment to campus appearance and safety

• Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, and lift regularly throughout the workday
• Must be able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs using proper lifting techniques
• Must have manual dexterity, vision, and coordination to operate landscaping equipment safely
• Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
