This position provides supervision and oversight and leads the trail crew in the field. Will report back problems and issues to the supervisor. The position provides daily direction and guidance to lower graded employees. Leads least 3 or more federal employees. The highest level of work led is the WG-7 level. Major duties are from the following trades: masonry, motor vehicle and equipment operion, and carpentry. Below are further details of duties:

Performing complex backcountry trail maintenance and trail structure construction in remote settings for long periods of time.

Leading crews in the reconstruction of log check runs, rock and log retaining walls, boardwalks and raised turnpikes/causeways, switchback layout and construction, and revegetion effort.

Leading crews in the set up and use of complex rigging systems and the protocols of backcountry work camps.

Leading diverse volunteers (Youth Corps, Student Conservion Associion, AmeriCorps, Youth Opportunity Center) in assigned trail maintenance and construction projects.

Physical Effort: Works in the field in a variety of weher conditions, including temperures above 100 degrees and below freezing with windy and rainy conditions possible. Incumbent required stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment th weigh up to 50 pounds. Incumbent required to hike up to 10 miles a day with a up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside where dirt, spray, fumes is present. Also required to work in extreme weher conditions and/or wear protective equipment and clothing th are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequently exposed to the potential risk of broken bones, shock, burns, cuts and bruises.
