The Village of Huntley is seeking applicants for the position of Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department.
This semi-skilled position provides skilled maintenance and repair work. Work involves performance of a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Village streets, sidewalks, water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drainage, municipal buildings, and similar facilities. Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor. Work is reviewed through observation of results, including completeness and workmanship.

  • Provides exceptional customer service, promoting and maintaining a positive Village image in a constructive work environment. Fosters pride and professionalism in the workplace and community. Adheres to all departmental and Village safety policies. Consistent attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, water lines, sewer lines, and other similar facilities.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as dump trucks, front end loader, backhoe, 3-ton roller vacuum truck, street sweeper, and a variety of other similar equipment.
  • Operates push, self-propelled and riding mowing equipment.
  • Operates a variety of miscellaneous equipment and small tools such as chain saws, welding torches, brush chipper, weed eaters, concrete saws, air hammers, drills, and other related equipment.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations including plowing and salting.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of water distribution, storm and sanitary collection systems.
  • Performs landscaping activities including mowing grass, sweeping and raking grounds, planting and trimming trees and shrubs, and chemical application.
  • Performs road maintenance and repair tasks including hot-mix asphalt, patching potholes, filling cracks, concrete sidewalks and curbs; pavement marking, and street signs.
  • Performs activities necessary for traffic control including placing barricades and message boards, and flagging traffic.
  • Performs heavy physical labor loading and unloading trucks and attaching and detaching accessories to equipment such as plows and spreaders.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; experience working with construction, maintenance, and repair equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses and Certifications
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Drivers License with airbrake endorsement within six months of hire date.

Possession of or ability to obtain IDOT Flagger certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Position requires possibility of call out on a 24-hour basis, 7 days a week. Response time for emergency callouts not to exceed 30 minutes.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation and traffic control.
  • Knowledge of the safety hazards and precautions associated with the operation of motorized and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to perform difficult physical tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
  • Skill in safe and effective operation, care, and maintenance of assigned equipment and tools.
Hours: Forty (40) hours per week, Monday Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Ability and willingness to respond to after-hours call backs and emergency situations as necessary.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit and includes participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

Post Offer Requirements: Completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical and drug screen, along with a background check is required.
