JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of a Lead or Head Custodian or other supervisor, performs custodial work in the cleaning, security and minor maintenance of a city or school building; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance such as building shelves, installing window screens and storm windows, plumbing, carpentry, electrical repairs, raking leaves, shoveling snow and collecting refuse.
  • Sweeps, mops and waxes floors, washes walls and windows, dusts, shampoos carpets, and performs other cleaning duties.
  • Cleans and mops lavatories and replaces soap and paper towels.
  • Prepares and paints surfaces as necessary.
  • Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture, electrical fixtures, windows and window shades, locks, faucets and other equipment.
  • Prepares and operates vehicles for snow removal and sanding operations, makes minor adjustments to equipment as needed and cleans and removes equipment as needed.
  • Assembles and moves furniture and office equipment as directed.
  • Assists tradeworkers in performance of their duties.
  • Participates in demolition and renovation work as directed.
  • Changes light bulbs, re-set breaker switches as required.
  • Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish, segregates recyclables.
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, also removes snow and ice from walks and driveways and performs a variety of other grounds keeping tasks.
  • Cleans and maintains gutters as assigned.
  • Operates various types of hand and power tools incidental to repair, maintenance, and renovation functions.
  • Maintains the operations of an oil or gas fired low pressure steam, hot water or hot air heating system.
  • Incidentally drives a light truck or car to transport supplies or residents.
  • Receives, moves and stores incoming supplies.
  • Performs a variety of errands and related custodial tasks; creates and maintains records as required.
  • May be assigned responsibility for a building or school.
  • May be required to direct the work of other custodial/maintenance workers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and materials used in buildings and grounds maintenance, including painting, plumbing, carpentry and electrical.
  • Working knowledge of safety practices associated with work assignments and operation of assigned equipment.
  • Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment.
  • Skill in making minor repairs and performing a variety of routine maintenance tasks.
  • Working knowledge of the use and care of hand and power tools and materials used in general maintenance, demolition and renovation.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the operation of a building HVAC system.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience in building or grounds cleaning or maintenance activities.

Note: Requires possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License at time of appointment.
