Job Summary
Performs grounds maintenance at assigned Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campus locations to keep the grounds safe and beautiful throughout the year. Includes turf and bed maintenance, plant and tree care, irrigation, snow removal, and various other landscape maintenance tasks. This is an important position to the college because all duties performed are visible and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal at each campus.
Requires moderate physical effort to perform a variety of gardening maintenance duties including weeding, mowing/trimming/edging grass, bed cleanup, flower planting, pruning trees and shrubs, transplanting/planting sod, litter/leaf/debris removal, mowing, and general equipment maintenance.
May assist the supervisor in giving direction to part time staff. Position will be required to work under various weather conditions ranging from heat and cold, rain and snow. This position is considered an entry-level groundskeeper.
This position will be required to rotate between at least two campuses.
Position has a regular full-time (40 hours/week) schedule but requires flexibility and must be available to for call-back duties in the case of snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The Grounds department normal hours of operation are 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Perform a variety of landscape/gardening maintenance duties such as turf maintenance (i.e., mowing, edging, and trimming), weeding and cleaning out beds, and seasonal cleanup tasks.
Perform regular equipment maintenance (i.e., fueling, cleaning and inspections).
Maintain irrigation systems for proper water distribution to various landscapes including installation, maintenance, and repair (e.g., repairs to valves, pipes, sprinkler heads) at various campuses.
Maintain grounds to include watering grass, flowers, and shrubs, transplant/plant sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, general weeding, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance.
Remove snow and ice and apply application of ice melt in designated locations as needed. Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and roadways.
Operation and maintenance of equipment associated with snow removal job duties.
Perform sprinkler emergency repair work on a 24 hour/365 day on call basis at campus locations.
Receive, complete, and close out work orders in the CMMS (Sprocket) system, enter time worked, and order materials.
Follow safety protocols including use of PPE.
Receive training for all grounds equipment before use.
Follow specific directions and learn from Supervisor.
Learn new skills as they pertain to the job.
Complete all college required training courses.
Work a set schedule, within the 6:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Perform work in various weather conditions (sometimes extreme and uncomfortable).
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Understanding of techniques and methods of landscape maintenance.
Safe and proper use of all ground's tools and equipment.
Proper use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
Knowing the difference between a desirable species and a weed.
Identifying work that needs to be completed to meet standards of care.
Willingness and desire to learn and grow as an individual.
Ability to take direction, and at times constructive criticism.
Basic computer skills such as MS Office, Teams, CMMS, and internet navigation.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Problem solving skills.
Ability to compete low speed vehicle training.
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
Zero (0) to three (3) years direct, paid, full-time work experience required.
Trade off 1:1 in education/experience requirement.
Part-time experience may be considered on a pro-rated basis.
Must have a valid Utah driver's license.
In addition to regular work schedule, must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Preferred Qualifications
