Summary
The Custodian/Handy Man fulfills the mission by maintaining a neat, clean, safe, and organized indoor and outdoor environment. The Custodian/Handy Man assists the staff by ensuring that the parish facilities and property are well maintained for its purpose. The Custodian/Handy Man has decision-making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with organizational policies.
Essential Job Functions
- Supports and upholds the ministry of the Catholic Church
- Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
- Supports and adheres to the Religious Standards, policies and procedures of the Archdiocese
- Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive matters
- Cleans rooms, offices, hallways, and carpeted areas regularly by means of sweeping, mopping, and/or dusting
- Cleans and disinfects bathrooms regularly and replenishes supplies
- Removes trash from offices, classrooms, common areas, and main church building on a regular basis
- Conducts weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning and minor maintenance (such as A/C filter replacement, light bulbs, etc.), as required
- Assists with set-up and clean-up for meetings and special events
- Maintains exterior property (to include lawn and garden, parking lot, etc.)
- Applies universal precautions in cleaning practices
- Maintains the security of issued keys, secures buildings, turns off lights
- Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
- Maintains a work schedule that maximizes availability to the staff
Other Job Functions
- Collaborates with others to enhance the work environment
- Conducts emergency clean ups and repairs as needed
- Conducts periodic maintenance activities and minor repairs
- Communicates maintenance and repair issues to the pastor
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to follow general and detailed instructions from supervisor
- Skill in critical thinking and planning
- Basic mechanical skills preferred, but not required
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
Working Conditions
- Required to manage moderate levels of stress
- Required to work in standard work conditions indoors and outdoors
Mental/Physical Demands
- Required to lift or carry furniture, equipment, and supplies
- Required to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
- Required to perform strenuous walking, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, climbing, twisting, grasping, and reaching overhead
- Required to operate outdoor equipment such as lawn mower, weed trimmer, pruner, lopper, and other such outdoor tools
- Required to hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
- Required to work with chemicals, exposure to dust, and slippery and uneven walking surfaces
- Required to work in various climate conditions
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, preferred
- Experience with past custodial work or building maintenance preferred but not required
