Custodian/Grounds Maintenance Worker
The Valley Park School District is seeking a full-time Custodian/Grounds Worker to join our facilities team. This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and aesthetic appeal of district buildings and grounds. Duties will include general custodial work, grounds care, and light maintenance tasks to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community.
Examples of Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesGeneral Grounds & Maintenance Responsibilities
Mow lawns and school district grass areas; edge around sidewalks, fences, driveways, and play areas.
Control weeds, trim shrubs, and maintain landscaping.
Plant, fertilize, water, and care for lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Operate and maintain grounds equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and sprayers.
- Safely operate and maintain custodial and grounds equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance on grounds equipment.
Remove snow and ice from entrances, sidewalks, and parking areas as needed.
- Prepare athletic fields for sporting events.
- Assist the facilities team with minor repairs and maintenance projects.
- Respond to emergencies and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
- Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
General Custodial Responsibilities
Empty trash and recycling containers.
- Restock supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc.) as needed.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish furniture/fixtures.
Clean and sanitize restrooms, cafeterias, offices, classrooms, and other assigned areas in accordance with established procedures and standards.
Strip, buff, and refinish floors; vacuum and extract carpets.
Wash interior and exterior windows.
Set up and break down furniture and equipment for events.
Maintain security of assigned keys, badges, and entry points.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Knowledge of safe work practices, cleaning procedures, and groundskeeping techniques.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round, in various weather conditions.
- Must work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments.
- Must follow district guidelines regarding dress code.
Strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism.
Prolonged standing and walking, climbing stairs/ladders.
Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
Stooping, bending, and reaching regularly.
Full range of motion in neck, shoulders, back, torso, knees, and ankles.
Ability to work with cleaning chemicals, solvents, and disinfectants.
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Reports to: Director of Facilities
As a condition of employment, all new hires will be required to complete a FBI, State Highway Patrol and Children’s Division of the Department of Social Services background check.
Qualifications:
- Experience strongly preferred .
- Stable work history.
- Demonstrate aptitude/competency for assigned responsibilities.
- Demonstrates initiative, cooperation and enthusiasm.
- Ability to meet the requirements of the district’s job description.
