The opportunity to serve the City of Westerville and its citizens as a Maintenance Worker in the Parks Maintenance Division could be for you! Parks Maintenance is actively looking for a candidate who strives to provide excellent service and possess a desire to be a part of a team. This is a semi-skilled maintenance position performing a variety of maintenance, repair, finishing, grounds maintenance and vehicle operation activities on a shift or project. Work involves performing and leading a variety of city park projects, grounds maintenance and repair work including the operation of loaders, backhoes, mowers, power tools, snow blowers, jack hammers, front end loaders, sprayers and other equipment. Position may perform some lead work over crewmembers. Please note, that this position is under the United Steelworkers (USW) Union, as such, a successful candidate would start at Step 1 and earn $24.90/hr.

REGULAR HOURS OF WORK: Regular hours of work are expected to be Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM but may vary depending on departmental needs . This position is open until filled. Applications are being reviewed as they are received. Work is performed under the direction of a Parks Manager. Work is reviewed through observation for results obtained and performance evaluations. Position may serve as crew leader and/or lead worker.
  • Trains, assist, guides, and leads a crew of part time or seasonal maintenance workers, on a shift or maintenance project; tracks and retains maintenance records, worksheets; prepares monthly and daily reports; trains crews on proper use and maintenance of equipment; maintains all equipment; orders equipment parts, as needed.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping maintenance work; maintains parks and city grounds by mowing grass, pruning trees and shrubs, edging, seeding chemical applications, mulching and providing other grounds maintenance assistance.
  • Performs specialized tasks such as preparing surfaces of playing fields, making and setting signs, assists in setting markers and other landscape maintenance.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins as needed.
  • Provides and fulfills stand-by staffing needs responding to after hours call outs.
  • Performs park cleanup operations including trash pickup, cleaning and light repair of restrooms and shelters, and addresses concerns of park users.
  • Assists in park construction and repair projects including playgrounds, painting, hardscapes and concrete work.
  • Assists with special event preparation, event details, traffic control and cleanup.
  • Operates chippers, stump grinders, chainsaws and other related urban forestry equipment. Ability to perform various tree operations including climbing with rope and saddle preferred, or willingness to learn
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Possession of high school diploma, or equivalent, and three years experience in construction and maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skill:
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in parks and grounds maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the safe and correct use of hand and power tools and equipment common to the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use and apply basic written and mathematic skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles and operate commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to load and unload trucks with front end loader.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.; shovels, bricks, wood, and other equipment and transport dirt, gravel, and other materials from one location to another.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and equipment.
  • Ability to dig, bend, and lift for patching pavement and other repairs.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to operate and control power tools such as jack hammers and chain saws.
  • Ability to obtain pesticide applicators certification within one year.
  • Ability to acquire a valid Ohio commercial driver's license within six months.
  • Ability to maintain/possess a valid Ohio commercial driver's license.
  • Must maintain any certifications required by the department to perform the work at a journeyman level.
