JOB GOAL: The goal of the Day/Night Custodian is to provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, efficient and well-maintained place in which to learn, play, and develop. Perform routine cleaning in school buildings under the direction of and according to the schedule provided by the Building Administrator and/or the Facilities Manager with daily guidance from the Head and/or Lead Custodians.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed for the position.

- Ability to skillfully use cleaning materials and equipment safely, effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to make minor repairs.
- Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with staff, students, and families.
- Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods and the use, routine care and maintenance and safety of cleaning materials and equipment used in building custodial and light maintenance work.
- Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Familiarity with the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Perform physical requirements which require and may include:
- moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
- frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping and crawling.
- exposure to conditions, including outdoor weather, where heating, cooling, and ventilation may be inadequate at times.
- may require exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, and odors.
- ability to lift and move furniture, desks, shelving, staging, and cleaning supplies.
- ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, and other equipment.
- ability to climb ladders, stretch, bend, stoop and crawl to perform a variety of cleaning and repairs including painting, and cleaning roof, gutters, and drains.
- ability to walk to various locations within the school building and the grounds.
- ability to work primarily in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- possible exposure to bodily fluids in cleaning due to student injury or illness.
- Some prior experience in school or other commercial custodial work preferred.
- Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as deemed appropriate and acceptable by the School Board or Administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
- Clean areas of the school as assigned (i.e., classrooms, halls, offices, rest rooms, cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium, etc.), vacuum, mop, buff floors, wash windows, clean chalk/white boards, dust, launder, paint, replace light bulbs, make minor repairs, etc.
- Sweep walks and entrances, and pick up manageable debris on the grounds, clean drains, gutters, and roofs.
- Wash, scrub, disinfect rest rooms daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures, door panels, and drinking fountains daily.
- Clean up spills, pick up trash, respond to special requests for custodial services from faculty members with supervisor approval.
- Set up, take down, and move furniture, shelving and partitions as assigned.
- Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to the proper authority.
- Be responsible for locking doors and windows, turning out lights and securing building as assigned.
- Day custodians check daily to ensure that the building meets safety and security protocols during the hours of building occupancy. In the absence of a lead custodian or in support of the lead custodian, assume responsibility for the daily closing of school facilities, ensuring that the building is secured, all windows and exit doors are closed and locked, all panic bars are activated and working properly and all required alarms are set.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information.
- Assist in greeting and directing visitors to the appropriate person and location.
- Participate in complete and thorough deep cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings during scheduled breaks and summer months when school is not in session.
- Participate in in-service programs as assigned.
- Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may be deemed appropriate by the Board or Administration.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid card
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
- Valid Oregon Driver's License (preferred) to assist with efficiently covering absences at other locations when needed.
