This position independently performs duties th require proficiency in special procedures and broad knowledge of service operions, such as food and beverage preparion, modified diets, computer proficiency, dishwashing, dry and refrigered storage, and safety and sanition.
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Sets up and breaks down assigned stion with the correct supplies and food items;
Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware;
Decides wh food items to serve for the most common diets when the diet card or tray ticket identifies only the kind of diet called for;
Provides pients with basic informion about modified diets and the nutrition services th are available;
Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designed by the menu;
Follows directions in assembling, measuring, weighing, or mixing ingredients for basic formulas and supplemental feedings following standardized recipes and using sanitary techniques;
Delivers meal trays to the pients' bedsides; reporting the pients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian;
Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparion area including assembling, labeling and arranging completed recipe items in preparion for use by cooks;
Prepares fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts along with individual and bulk nourishments and supplement foods and beverages for pients;
Makes final check of diet trays assembled by lower grade workers for completeness, correct food temperures;
Works in one or more functional areas of the kitchen such as food preparion, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigered storage and receiving, and the serving line;
Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and reled areas;
Performing other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Wage Grade 4 Food Service Workers perform work requiring light to modere physical effort. They may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and he from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperures and humidity. The work area is well-lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperure changes when entering walk-in refrigerion or freezing units.

Current Title 38 Hybrid employees and employees in the Excepted Service: To be eligible for a Title 5 position based on the Interchange Agreement, you must meet the following:1. Be currently serving under a permanent appointment.2. Served continuously for least 1 year in the other merit system prior to appointment under the interchange agreement.
Current permanent Veterans Canteen Service employees may apply for considerion under this vacancy announcement.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through Nional Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizions (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience th transles directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience credited on the basis of time actually spent in approprie activities. Physical Requirements: Wage Grade 4 Food Service Workers perform work requiring light to modere physical effort. They may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and he from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperures and humidity. The work area is well-lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperure changes when entering walk-in refrigerion or freezing units.
