DEFINITION: Responsible for supporting the maintenance and operation activities of Water Treatment division through various maintenance, cleaning, painting, and material handling tasks.

REPORTS TO: The Water Treatment Plant Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
  • Sweeping, mopping, trash collection, and cleaning.
  • Uses variety of hand tools such as a wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, rakes, shovels, tape measures, brooms, and other small tools to perform work.
  • Drive trucks to procure and deliver parts and supplies.
  • Operate lift trucks to unload trucks.
  • Operate motorized and standard pallet jacks and barrel carts.
  • Operate power tools such as chain saw, rotary and reciprocating saw, drills, and pressure washer.
  • Operate track vac basin sludge removal and decant systems.
  • Job task preparation at direction of mechanic or supervisor to include tool kitting.
  • Drive backhoe from site to site.
  • Fence maintenance activities to include setting posts and replacing barbed wire.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks on eyewash, showers, extinguishers, remote pumping stations and elevated storage tanks.
  • Assists with general maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment.
  • Non-electrician light bulb replacement from ladder or scaffold.
  • Performs both pre-trip and post-trip inspections daily on assigned vehicles or equipment.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Weed pulling.
  • Confined space entry and monitoring of confined space personnel. This requires use of gas monitor and fall restraint rigging.
  • Climbing fixed and portable ladders for gearbox rigging and maintenance.
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor
  • Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Ability to read, write, and perform math at level associated with completion of high school.
  • Special Qualifications:
    • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Knowledge and/or ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to learn the water treatment processes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to report to work on time and to perform the duties of the position for an entire work day.
  • Ability to perform occasional overtime, holiday and weekend work as needed.
  • Ability to perform duties in all weather conditions including heat and cold extremes as well as rain and wind.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the water treatment. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained and efficiently operating treatment plant.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  • None
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is performed inside and outdoors. Most indoor spaces are noisy and not cooled.
  • Safety toe boots requirement.
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection in most work spaces.
