JOB TITLE: School Custodian (differnt shifts)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) Months (Classified)
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISORS:
Principal: supervisor of day to day duties (duties specific to the school, cleaning zones, event preparations, etc.)
Facilities Supervisor: supervisor for district wide procedures, scheduling, special projects, cleaning protocols, training.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The School Custodian is responsible for performing all custodial tasks at assigned locations to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
General Cleaning Responsibilities
Clean assigned areas, including classrooms, offices, gyms, restrooms, cafeterias, multipurpose rooms, and district grounds.
Disinfect high-touch surfaces daily to minimize the spread of illness, especially during cold/flu season.
Bathrooms: Clean floors, walls, sinks, toilets, urinals; replenish supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, soap).
Trash: Empty all trash cans in designated areas and maintain clean, debris-free floors.
Floors: Sweep, vacuum, and mop daily; post caution signage as required.
Windows: Clean windows regularly in assigned areas.
Grounds: Remove litter and debris from sidewalks, parking lots, and grounds to maintain campus cleanliness. This includes those areas used by outside groups where trash may be generated.
Maintenance and Safety
Perform minor maintenance tasks (e.g., assembling custodial equipment, replacing vacuum belts/bags, assembling/repairing furniture and fixtures, installing wall hangings).
Maintain knowledge of emergency shut-off switches, valves, and safety/health protocols.
Assist with summer maintenance, including stripping and waxing floors, moving furniture, and painting.
Prepare the campus for daily operations (open gates, raise flag, clear and salt walkways).
Respond promptly to safety or operational issues such as facility damage, vandalism, reporting fire alarm troubles, roof leaks and notify the school administration for resolution.
Report and remove hazards that may cause injury or fire.
Ensure custodial closet and storage areas are clean, organized, and compliant with OSHA and district safety standards.
Operational Duties
Conserve resources by avoiding unnecessary use of water, electricity, and supplies.
Replace light bulbs and report additional lighting issues to the school administration for work order submission.
Replace ceiling tiles as needed; report sprinkler-related tile replacements to the school administration for work order submission.
Clean or replace accessible HVAC filters.
Report mechanical, structural, electrical, or plumbing issues to the school administration for work order submission, providing as much detailed information as possible.
Secure all windows and doors at the end of the shift.
Assist with room set-up for school events, testing, or emergency drills.
Perform other duties as assigned by the school administration or facilities supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED required
Effective oral and written communication skills
Ability to work as a part of a team and independently monitor progress
Knowledge of equipment and materials used in cleaning operations and best practice
Valid TN Drivers License
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Requires strenuous physical activity, including:
Lifting up to 50 lbs regularly (occasionally over 50 lbs with assistance).
Operating cleaning equipment.
Standing and walking for extended periods.
Frequent bending and stooping.
Indoor and outdoor work assignments.
Exposure to cleaning chemicals and use of related equipment.
Must be able to wear required PPE when handling certain chemicals or working in specific areas.
Ability to climb ladders for overhead tasks.
Ability to respond promptly during off-hours emergencies, if required.
