Under the direction of the Maintenance Director, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, sanitary, and attractive facilities to ensure a healthy and professional environment for County employees and visitors. This position plays a key role in supporting daily operations by providing high-quality custodial services in County buildings and grounds. Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and a strong commitment to customer service. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises no one Minimum Qualification Standards:
High school diploma or GED preferred. Valid Drivers License. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
Prior custodial experience in a professional, commercial, or institutional setting is desirable.
Ability to operate cleaning equipment and follow safety protocols.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness and hygiene.
Excellent time management and organizational skills. Language Skills: Ability to read and understand labels, safety data sheets (SDS), instructions, and basic work-related documents in English. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public using basic verbal and written communication. Can follow written work orders and verbal instructions accurately.
Knowledge: Basic knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, equipment, and supplies used in custodial work. Familiarity with safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with OSHA standards. Understanding of basic workplace safety practices, including bloodborne pathogens and universal precautions. Knowledge of minor maintenance or facility upkeep tasks is a plus.
Ability: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time efficiently. Ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and sanitation across multiple areas. Ability to use cleaning tools and machinery such as vacuums, floor buffers, and carpet cleaners. Ability to recognize and report building maintenance needs or safety hazards. Ability to interact respectfully and courteously with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Ability to follow safety rules and procedures at all times.
Physical Demands: Must be able to stand and walk for long periods, up to 8 hours per shift. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly. Manual dexterity to operate cleaning tools and equipment. May be required to work with or around cleaning chemicals, some of which may have strong odors. Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when maintaining building entrances or grounds.
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed indoors in office buildings and public facilities. Occasional outdoor work may be required for groundskeeping or entryway maintenance. May be exposed to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, or hazardous materials with appropriate safety precautions.
- Performs daily custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors.
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms, including toilets, sinks, urinals, mirrors, and floors.
- Stocks and replenishes restrooms with toilet tissue, hand towels, soap, and deodorizer supplies.
- Empties trash receptacles and replace liners in all assigned areas.
- Cleans and sanitizes office spaces, hallways, conference rooms, break rooms, and other public or staff areas.
- Operates cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and vacuum cleaners.
- Ensures assigned areas are maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Monitors and maintains inventory of cleaning and janitorial supplies; notifies supervisor of items needed for reorder.
- Assists with basic groundskeeping such as picking up litter, sweeping walkways, or trimming small shrubs.
- May provide support to maintenance staff as a laborer on minor repairs or improvement projects.
- Follows established safety procedures and reports unsafe conditions or maintenance needs to supervisor.
- Demonstrates consistent efforts to improve efficiency, support teamwork, and deliver high-quality custodial services.
