JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables.

MAJOR DUTIES

  1. Operates a flatbed truck to collect solid waste and recyclable materials missed during the regular route collection.

  2. Make deliveries and routine repairs to carts, bins, and in-ground units.

  3. Will assist with sanitation route collections as needed.

  4. Assists in creating and closing out work orders.

  5. Performs pre-trip inspections on assigned equipment or vehicle; checks brakes, lights, belts, hoses, fluid levels, air pressure, etc., reports equipment or vehicle service, maintenance, or repair needs to the immediate supervisor.

  6. Completes and maintains all required logs and reports.

  7. Assists in the collection of yard debris and large items.

  8. Provides information and assistance to the general public.

  9. Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the basic methods, techniques, and equipment used in the transport of solid waste and recyclables.
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and operating procedures related to the operation and maintenance of assigned trucks and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of city geography, including street locations.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in utilizing a variety of tools and equipment in performing solid waste collection activities.
  • Skill in the loading and unloading of solid waste and other materials
  • Skill in troubleshooting and maintaining vehicles.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Sanitation Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, supervisory instructions, traffic laws, and safety policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The purpose of this position is to operate a truck in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective management of solid waste.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a truck and outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • More than one year of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must obtain a Class B commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia within 6 months of hire.
