Position will serve as a County Maintenance Engineer for Wake County based in Franklin County in Bunn, NC. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising and directing various aspects of Highway Maintenance operations including force account and purchase order contract construction. Duties include responding to inquiries from the public, DOT Management, Media, etc., regarding DOT policies and procedures, division projects, plans and proposed work. This position has Emergency Call Back status and must be able to respond to Highway emergencies and work during inclement weather events.
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
- Experience in the use of engineering judgment and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems
- Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
- Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conduct investigations and resolve various issues
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Additional Expectations:
Ability to use engineering judgment and knowledge to solve difficult highway projects and maintenance problems; to accomplish force accounts construction projects; to supervise and monitor maintenance programs to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Must have the ability to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget and data. Must supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees and must be able to effectively communicate and maintain working relationship with general public, local governments, fellow employees, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and make field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to apply professional engineering skills and knowledge to difficult highway projects and problems.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
