The City of San Marcos is currently hiring for a Part Time Maintenance Worker position to support the Parks Division.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual, skilled, or semi-skilled duties related to public works construction, maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities, maintenance and repair of city streets and sidewalks, municipal parks, rights-of-way, drainage systems, traffic signing and striping, and other public improvements; operates power driven equipment.

Part time employment with the City of San Marcos is limited to no more than 999 hour per fiscal year and an average of 20 hours per week, based on the approved budget for this position.

Parks: Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled landscape maintenance work in City parks, street medians and parkways, and other City properties. Participates and may lead a crew in assigned work projects. Performs traffic control duties. Maintains, trims, plants, waters, cultivates, fertilizes, rakes, and cares for lawns and grounds, removes shrubs and trees, prepares soil for planting and transplanting. Maintains city park facilities including installation, inspection, and maintenance of playground equipment, restrooms, plumbing equipment, and irrigation systems. Maintains storm and drainage facilities, and provides proper drainage facilities on medians and park sites. Performs concrete and masonry repairs, and performs other manual labor necessary to complete a job. Operates hand and portable power tools and other maintenance equipment to remove debris, trim grass, and remove high weeds in City rights-of-way. Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment. Cleans and maintains restrooms and park structures. Uses chemicals and or other supplies, sprays for pest and weed control using non-restricted chemicals and products. Maintains simple records through both handwritten and electronic documentation, and reads and interprets directions and sketches. Provides and participates in emergency responses which, while not all inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc. Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: 100-gallon power sprayer, mower, fertilizer spreader, blower, string trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, turf sweeper, trencher, auger, drill, chain saw, circular saw, stake pounder, pruner, and other miscellaneous hand tools. Assist with special projects such as prepping areas for concrete work, minor plumbing repairs, sanding, and painting. Performs other related work as required.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Parks: Ability to operate basic landscape maintenance equipment (hand mower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, and blower) safely and effectively. Understand what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn when operating this type of power equipment. Understand what it means to work and complete tasks as part of a crew.

Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and a high school graduate/GED.

Experience

Parks: At least six months manual labor experience involving the use of hand tools, portable power tools, and heavy equipment. Having an understanding of irrigation components and irrigation management.
