Oversees the reception, recording, and release of property and evidence and provides information and assistance to the municipal courts and general public by performing the following duties.

Receives, records, controls, and disposes of property and evidence: Receives and records property/evidence from Police Department personnel and other authorized personnel. Safeguards property/evidence and maintains the integrity of the chain of custody. Responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence, which may be used in a court of law. Receives, records, and disposes of abandoned, lost, or recovered properties through prescribed channels. Arranges for the destruction of confiscated property/evidence, including drugs and weapons. Issues, receives, and inventories officer duty equipment.
Keeps Records: Maintains detailed inventory including such items as narcotics, jewelry, currency, weapons, and numerous household and business properties in the evidence room. Gathers and maintains strict control over items to be auctioned and money to be turned over to applicable parties. Informs owners and other applicable parties as to the procedure for recovering property. Keeps records of such items or any disposition taken. Keeps records of officer duty equipment and maintains strict control over equipment.
Case Research and Testimony: Researches cases, contacts case investigators and/or other police agencies, and submits requests to the district court offices for disposition. May be called on to present testimony regarding the integrity of the chain of evidence.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years related experience.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The supervisor provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervisor provides additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods or advice on source material available. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for decision or help. The supervisor reviews some of the work, with more review of difficult or unfamiliar assignments.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The work consists of duties that involve related steps, processes, or methods; the decision regarding what needs to be done involves various choices requiring the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations; actions to be taken or responses to be made differ in such things as the source of information, the kind of transactions or entries, or other differences of a factual nature.
GUIDELINES:
A number of specific guidelines are available; judgment is used in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines; minor deviations can be made in specific cases; significant deviations are referred to the supervisor. The employee rarely makes any decisions that affect persons or situations beyond the scope of his/her job.
