Job Title: Assistant Cook (with Driver Responsibilities)
Reports To: Head Cook / Director of Food Service
Hours: 7:45-1:30pm on Full Days of School
Position Summary:
The Assistant Cook supports the Head Cook in preparing and serving nutritious, appealing meals to students and staff in accordance with USDA and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) requirements. This role is also responsible for maintaining high standards of food safety, sanitation, and customer service. When assigned driving duties, the position includes transporting meals and supplies safely between school buildings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist the Head Cook with food preparation, pre-preparation, and panning as directed.
- Set up and break down serving lines in an efficient and sanitary manner.
- Operate necessary food service and point-of-sale equipment.
- Ensure student meals meet USDA meal pattern requirements for reimbursement.
- Address student questions and concerns in a professional, sympathetic, and confidential manner.
- Maintain accurate production records following MDE and departmental standards.
Sanitation & Safety
- Assist with daily cleaning of all kitchen areas and equipment to meet cleanliness and sanitary requirements.
- Store and safeguard food and supplies properly, following Head Cook’s direction.
- Follow all food safety guidelines to prevent contamination or spoilage.
Inventory & Ordering
- Assist with ordering supplies and receiving deliveries as directed by the Head Cook.
Driver Responsibilities (when assigned)
- Ensure food safety standards are maintained during transportation of potentially hazardous foods.
- Complete morning deliveries between school buildings in a timely and safe manner.
- Use safe driving techniques and comply with all traffic regulations.
- Maintain a pleasant, helpful demeanor when interacting with staff during deliveries.
- Report any vehicle issues promptly to the Director of Food Service.
- Identify potential issues and suggest solutions or improvements.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior food service experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (for driving assignments).
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced school kitchen environment.
- May require working in varying temperatures (hot kitchen, cold storage areas).
- Driving duties may require outdoor work in various weather conditions.
