Function / Position Summary
This position supports the daily operations of an assigned school building under the direction of the Building Administrator, Coordinator of Custodial Services, and Campus Lead Custodian. Responsibilities include the operation and repair of building equipment and mechanical systems, as well as custodial support for general cleaning and school events. The role ensures that the building remains clean, safe, and fully functional throughout the school day, providing a comfortable learning environment for students and staff.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Perform general building maintenance tasks, including repairs, routine preventive maintenance, and system scheduling; escalate major issues to Plant Operations.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of the swimming pool, including water treatment and testing, monitoring pumps and filtration systems, and routine cleaning and upkeep.
- Conduct routine inspections (daily, weekly, monthly), including but not limited to, building systems, mobile classrooms, fire and security alarms, playgrounds, roofs, generators, boilers.
- Perform daily custodial duties, including, but not limited to, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, trash removal, restocking supplies, and sanitizing restrooms.
- Complete assigned semi-annual and annual projects, including, but not limited to, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, restroom maintenance, and graffiti removal.
- Support daily and special event setups, including but not limited to, furniture arrangement, cafeteria preparation/cleanup, extra-curricular activities and equipment staging.
- Perform general grounds upkeep duties, including snow/ice removal, salting, and landscape maintenance, including trash/debris pick up.
- Respond to custodial and maintenance requests from staff and administration in a timely and courteous manner.
- Maintain "on-call" status to respond to emergency and/or after-hour events such as fire alarms, break-ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage.
- Adhere to security protocols for locking and unlocking doors. Actively monitor and report any security concerns, and address immediate safety hazards such as broken locks, spills or broken glass.
- Maintain adequate inventory and request custodial supplies and parts as needed.
- Support receiving, logging, inspecting and distributing building mail and deliveries. Prepare outgoing shipments as needed.
- Use approved communication platforms and work order system to promptly receive, initiate, track, complete, and close work orders and routinely monitor email and notifications for timely responses.
- Work independently or collaboratively with departmental, district, and/or contractor personnel to ensure the efficient operation and upkeep of all facilities.
- Assumes the role of Campus Lead Custodian when needed to ensure appropriate building coverage.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Illinois Drivers License required.
- State of Illinois Swimming Pool Operators License preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building maintenance and/or custodial services.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform repairs on mechanical and building systems, including boilers, air handling units, and temperature control systems.
- Experience working with swimming pools such as water treatment, testing and filtration systems preferred.
- Familiarity with the use of hand and power tools commonly used in facility maintenance.
- Experience working with HVAC systems and computer-assisted HVAC control systems preferred.
- Working knowledge of basic electrical systems and ability to perform such electrical repairs.
- Knowledge of custodial cleaning techniques, equipment, and chemicals.
- Ability to read and write in English, and perform basic math for job-related calculations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, staff, and the public
- Possess basic computer skills for communication and work order tracking.
- Must pass a written skills test related to building mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical, and safety procedures to qualify for an interview.
- Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to safely work on ladders, aerial and scissor lifts.
- Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.
Terms of Employment
This is a Tuesday Saturday,12-month ESSO position. Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education.
A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test. Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary.
