Description

The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a self-starter and motivated candidate that can lead to fill the position of Maintenance Technician (Lead Custodian) in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining City property and facilities, in addition to supporting special events.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Performs routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, removing trash and debris, and cleaning restrooms
  • As assigned, performs heavy cleaning tasks such as stripping and waxing floors and shampooing carpets; maintaining grounds including cutting grass, trimming shrubbery, raking/blowing leaves; shoveling snow, and event support. Conducts basic equipment maintenance and service requests
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and performs facility checks and inspections
  • Assists citizens & supports special events as needed
  • Hauls trailers
  • Assists with snow removal as needed
  • Assists with events setup and breakdown
  • Utilizes handheld tools and other equipment
  • Serves as lead to Maintenance worker
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED or specialized vocational training
  • Two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • None required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Chemicals required for proper floor maintenance
  • Operating instructions for cleaning equipment and materials
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Instructions for safety and accident prevention
  • Relevant OSHA standards for duties performed

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Maintaining the cleanliness of assigned facilities and grounds including restrooms, floors, trash, etc.
  • Learning and practicing acceptable cleaning methods
  • Listening to and following directions
  • Reading and documenting work via daily logs
  • Using equipment properly such as buffing machines, wet vacs, weed eaters, hand tools, air blowers, mopping equipment, dusting equipment, etc.
  • Customer service
  • Special event set up and support
  • Oral and written communication

Abilities (some combination of the following):

  • Pay attention to detail
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
  • Self-starter who can work independently
  • Interact positively with various employees and the general public

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
