The Building Maintenance Technician performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks to maintain, repair, construct and remodel City facilities and equipment.

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Six months to one year directly related work experience and/or training in building maintenance

Education and/or experience preferences: None

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: None

Knowledge: Standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the building construction trades; Occupational hazards and safety principles and practices in building maintenance work; Practices and procedures of electrical and plumbing work; Operation and application of a variety of construction tools and equipment.

Skills: Maintenance and repair work in plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning areas; Use and care for tools, supplies, and materials required in the work.

Abilities: Safely operate hand and power tools and equipment; Read, comprehend and carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions; Write short routine correspondence and memos; Communicate effectively with employees and customers; Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and compute rate, ratio, and percent; Read and understand blueprints, construction drawings, and schematics; Understand and follow oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with laborers, carpenters, and electricians to construct, maintain, and repair City buildings and equipment on time and within cost. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: Presents a professional, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials.

  • Inspects City buildings for damage and vandalism and repairs mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment not requiring a license.
  • Performs construction and installation projects on interior and exterior City buildings using skills in carpentry, cement finishing, electrical repair, plumbing, plastering, painting, roofing, and sheet rock.
  • Assists carpenters and electricians with installation, remodel, modification, and repair of City facilities, to include but not limited to light fixtures, bulbs, outlets, swimming pool lights, building furniture, cabinets, and related assignments.
  • Performs repairs on City building fixtures and furniture to include repairing or replacing door locks, glass or door fixtures.
  • Inspects and maintains heating and air conditioning systems and ductwork and changes filters on HVAC systems.
