this position is Full Time - Temporary (6 Months)
The Maintenance Worker position is responsible for assisting with the operation and maintenance of all mechanical equipment associated with the physical plant such as boilers, generators, compressors, pumps, fan systems, refrigeration, and pneumatic and electrical control systems. This position is responsible for carrying out the preventative maintenance of these systems under supervision as directed, plus the repair and maintenance of patient care equipment, buildings, grounds, and utility systems. Maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment may include the functions of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work, air conditioning, furniture repair, plastering-masonry, welding, and many others. A number of miscellaneous functions may be assigned to this department. Some include refuse collection and disposal and insect and rodent control, trucking and chauffeuring, snow removal, and maintenance and upkeep of grounds, grass, plants, trees, and shrubs.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Assist with maintaining all electrical systems and ancillary equipment, including refrigeration, air-handling equipment, motors, and wiring. Repair electrical circuits and equipment. Replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and appliances.
  • Maintains building and patient care equipment in good working order with ongoing preventive maintenance program.
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, and replaces pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas, and drainage systems of the hospital.
  • Constructs, repairs, and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions, and other parts of hospital buildings, using hand and power tools according to written or oral instructions.
  • Painting and preparation for painting or other required projects. Including smoothing surfaces; using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool. Removing old paint from surfaces, using paint remover, scrapers, and wire brushes to prepare surfaces for painting. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler. Selects premixed paint or prepare paint to match specifies colors. Paints surfaces, using brushes, spray gun or paint roller.
  • Maintains all required records, receipts, and information pertinent to costing out work assignments as required.
  • Monitors daily work order system for positive maintenance results for all departments.
  • Keep work areas orderly, clean and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitor daily the buildings and grounds for a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of boilers, pumps, and other boiler room equipment for the production of steam for building heat and hot water.
  • Assists in monitoring maintenance parts and supply levels.
  • Maintains appropriate licensing and certifications, as required by administration.
  • Quickly assembles necessary equipment at the beginning of each shift, and proceeds to work in a timely fashion.
  • May be required to move chairs and furniture in order to set up the Conference Rooms for scheduled conferences.
  • May be asked to help train newly hired maintenance workers, or to do some specific retraining if needed in a particular instance.
  • Helps in the effort to recycle aluminum, glass, paper, and cardboard by breaking down boxes, and transporting the collected materials as instructed.
  • Washes outside windows, glassed areas, and mirrors to attain a clean and streak-free appearance.
  • Maintains insect and rodent control on seasonal basis or as needed.
  • Participates in planting new lawns and repairing established lawns; using seed mixtures and application of fertilizer recommended for particular soil type and lawn locations.
  • Mows and trims lawns, using hand mower or power mower.
  • Participates with locating, planting or transplanting, shrubs, trees and flowers selected or recommended by the Plant Department for particular landscape effect.
  • Trims shrubs, prune trees, and cultivate flower gardens as assigned.
  • Must be able to recognize diseased plants and take proper precautions. May be responsible for spraying trees and shrubs, and applying supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to lawn and trees.
  • Assist the Maintenance Department with connecting and maintaining sprinkling equipment. Water lawns, flower beds, shrubs and trees.
  • Cleans grounds, using rakes, brooms, and hose. Shovel, sweep, and remove debris from grounds. Pick up trash and transport to specified locations.
  • Snow removal from doorway, stairways, walkways, parking lots, and spread sand to prevent slipping.
  • Know how to operate equipment used in buildings and grounds. Care for and maintain equipment and supplies used in performance of duties. Requisition supplies and equipment as needed.
  • May be required to deliver and pick up items for hospital related functions on an off hospital premises. Must have a valid Washington State drivers license. The Maintenance Coordinator or the Director of Support Services must authorize approval for pick-up and delivery.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reports for scheduled shift on time and prepared to assume responsibilities.
  • Reports to work in proper uniform/attire.
  • Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time.
  • Varies work schedule to meet the needs of the department.
  • Ensures the department manager has approved all scheduled overtime.
  • Seek supervisor approval before working beyond scheduled hours that will result in overtime.
  • Schedules all time off with supervisors approval.
  • Strictly adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policies 100% of the time.
  • Performs all duties as assigned.
  • Wears I.D. badge in a visible location at all times on hospital property.
  • Protects I.D. and access badge and reports any issues or loss immediately to supervisor or to the Human Resource Department.
  1. Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for information communicated at meetings and in email.
  • Attends all mandatory in service on a timely basis as scheduled.
  • Participates as an active team member at staff meetings.

  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of safety policies and procedures, the use of MSDS sheets, hazardous material procedures, and safety codes.
  • Respond appropriately to any Codes while working any shift (Code Blue, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Amber, Code Red, Code Orange, and Rapid Response Team).
  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of security issues, i.e. personal protection, protection of personal and hospital property.

  • Non-Clinical Personnel: This position has no responsibility for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients. However, the ability to communicate and interact with patients of all ages is required.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and distractions, as they are a normal part of the working environment.
  • Must be able to prioritize and quickly return to emergent tasks when interrupted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Hospital or related maintenance experience.
  • Basic computer skills including email functions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Must have legible handwriting.
  • Work order systems, preventative maintenance programs, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge and understanding of blue prints, electrical circuits, hydraulics, pneumatics, plumbing, painting, carpentry, boiler systems, refrigeration, and power generation systems.
  • Experience using a variety of tools and power tools, including but not limited to; drills, nail guns, paint sprayers, snow removal equipment, cleaning equipment (floor care, scrubbers, shampooers etc.), air compressors, and tools associated with building maintenance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • May be required to work any shift in emergencies. May be required to work any day of the week.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk and carry items routinely.
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs, and navigate stair climbing while carry objects routinely.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, and /or up to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching and/or Crawling.
  • Ascending or descending; ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps.

ENVIRONMENT:

Mid-Valley Hospital is a licensed 44-bed acute care facility located in North Central Washington, specifically in Okanogan County and the town of Omak. The working environment, generally pleasant, requires that this person be able to lift, bend, stoop, and occasionally crawl through and work in tight, sometimes, dirty spaces. This position participates in the handling of hazardous materials. Working hours is usually during the day, but may fluctuate, depending on various situations and work load. This position may be called to work at any hour of the day or night to deal with maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Subject to varying conditions, both indoor and outdoor as required to complete normal functions of maintenance for the entire facility:
    • Extreme Heat with or without Temperature Changes: Extreme Heat, Temperature sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Temperature Changes variations in temperature that accompany extreme heat and are sufficiently marked and abrupt to cause marked bodily reactions.
    • Noise and/or vibration: There is sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss and/or sufficient vibration (which is the production of an oscillating movement or strain on the body or its extremities from repeated motion or shock) to cause bodily harm if endured day after day.
