Job Description


The Floodwall and Stormwater Maintenance Mechanic performs strenuous manual tasks relating to the operations, maintenance and flood fighting activities of the Huntington Floodwall and Levee system.

Essential Functions

1. Observe/assess conditions of the Floodwall system

2. Operate pump stations, gates and valves

3. Install Floodwall gates

4. Perform maintenance and repairs including concrete, pipefitting, electrical, mechanical, welding, grass cutting and weed eating

5. Operate light and heavy machinery including tractor, backhoe, bulldozer, etc.

6. Prepare daily activity reports

7. Work overtime as needed during emergency situations and high-water events

8. Promotes courtesy and professionalism throughout the City of Huntington

Competencies

1. Ability to operate heavy machinery

2. Reasonable knowledge of safety practices regarding operation of various equipment

3. Reasonable knowledge of tools used in construction/maintenance work

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Work Environment
Work is performed in various locations. Exposure to all types of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. Employee may be exposed to raw sewage, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is regularly required to bend, reach, and touch. Employee is frequently required to drive, sit, stand, walk, talk, hear and smell; climb stairs; walk on uneven surfaces; climb or balance. The employee is required to lift and/or move objects up to 100 pounds, and to perform strenuous physical activities sometimes for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Schedule
This is a Full time position. Primary days of work are Monday through Friday. Must be available for 24-hour callout. Participates in Emergency Response System.

Travel
Frequent local travel is expected for this position

Required Education and Experience
Minimum High School diploma or GED

Preferred Education and Experience

Ability to read schematics, blueprints and engineering drawings

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Valid driver's license

Employee is required to obtain Class A CDL with tanker, air brake, and pintle hook endorsements within 90 calendar days
