The Department of Facilities and Operations is responsible for the functions of the City's physical spaces, including buildings, grounds and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure that these spaces are safe, comfortable, efficient, and sustainable, while also supporting the organization's objectives. Maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities and surrounding grounds is of the upmost importance, while providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
This position performs custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning, sanitizing, and restocking restrooms in City owned facilities. Most work is performed independently. This person is expected to report to work daily as scheduled and be prepared to work at the start of the shift wearing the proper attire. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.
While City Custodians are trained to clean all City facilities, this position will be based at the Sheboygan Police Department. This is a dayshift position but the individual will have flexibility to make their hours schedule with the supervisor.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
- Unlocks doors and ensures doors are locked after cleaning areas.
- Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Assists in on-the-job training of new staff.
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
- May provide vendors/contractors with access to areas for maintenance, when notified by the director or designee.
General Responsibilities:
- Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
- Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
- May assist or perform snow removal activities, cutting grass, and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
- Keeps building and property in a clean and orderly condition.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Possession and maintenance of valid driver's license and auto insurance in accordance with state of Wisconsin law required.
- One or more years of previous experience maintaining buildings and/or grounds and landscaping in a business setting preferred.
- Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures.
- Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, and cleaning solutions.
- Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to work with little one on one supervision as work is performed in numerous city facilities.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the department.
