This position is responsible for maintaining the City's forests, trees, and supporting parks, greenbelts, and other city facilities. Key tasks include tree care, such as pruning and removal, operating heavy and power equipment, and handling debris disposal. Additional duties involve landscaping, trail maintenance, and occasional interaction with city employees and the public.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all listed duties and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Performs tree care and maintenance by performing corrective and general pruning as required, planting and removing trees, and identifying and assessing for tree diseases and defects in parks and on public grounds.
  • Operates and maintains potentially hazardous equipment, including chainsaws, to trim and remove trees; ensures equipment and machinery operate safely and properly by performing preventative maintenance, identifying problems with equipment, replacing faulty or problematic parts, and repairing equipment as needed.
  • Assists with landscape installations and maintenance by tilling beds and installing edging for color beds; assists with tractor operations for installations of new trees and completing work orders.
  • Educates citizens and other employees about field and park conditions by replying to questions and inquiries and directing citizens to the appropriate departments.

Education & Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of relevant work experience. Preference for rigging and climbing knowledge and felling of trees.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certification and Other Requirements

Valid Class C Drivers License.

Overall Physical Strength Demands

Heavy - Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

Knowledge of:

  • City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, particularly concerning forestry-related codes and ordinances.
  • Forestry, tree care, and maintenance procedures, including tree pruning, removal, planting, and assessment of tree diseases and defects.
  • Safe operation and preventative maintenance of hazardous equipment, such as chainsaws and tractors.

Skill in:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with professional staff, vendors, the public, and City employees.
  • Providing outstanding customer service, including answering questions and directing citizens to appropriate departments.
  • Safely operating and maintaining equipment used in forestry and landscape operations.
  • Handling sensitive information, especially regarding public grounds and park conditions.
  • Working efficiently in outdoor, high-pressure environments with changing priorities.
  • Communicating effectively in both oral and written formats, particularly with citizens and other City employees.

Supervision Exercised:

  • Direct Supervision: Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to safety and procedural standards. Autonomy is granted at the task level, but work follows general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Heavy physical demands, requiring exertion of 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
  • Ability to operate and maintain hazardous equipment, including chainsaws, tractors, and other machinery.
  • Ability to drive a city or personal vehicle for business purposes.
