Facilities Janitor/Custodian

Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the custodial maintenance of city facilities.This position reports directly to the Facilities Manager or designee.

This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with a 40 hour work-week.Essential Functions:

  • Participates in the janitorial maintenance of municipal buildings and other City Facilities and installations.
  • Performs a variety of custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, emptying waste baskets, washing windows, etc.
  • Performs duties such as tile and carpet cleaning, dusting and polishing of furniture.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen and restrooms, replenishes and maintains supplies including soap dispensers, tissue and towels.
  • Reports to Supervisor of needed supplies to perform his/her duties.
  • May be required to move and lift boxes.
  • Participates in the setup for City events.
  • Follows MSDS guidelines and procedures when using various chemicals.
  • Receives and responds to trouble and complaint reports.
  • Keeps records of work performed.
  • Reports to supervisor on status of work orders material used, parts needed, etc.
  • Operates a city vehicle as a means of transportation to and from city facilities, and for the delivery and distribution of materials, parts and supplies needed to complete required tasks.
  • Performs mail room duties such as sorting incoming mail for distribution and dispatching outgoing mail, stamping date and time of receipt on incoming mail, sorting mail according to destination and type, such as returned letters, adjustments, bills, orders, and payments. May address mail, using addressing machine, stamps outgoing mail by hand or postage machine.
  • Works with minimum supervision.

Additional Duties:

  • Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Considerable experience in the provision of janitorial services. Certificate of competency in the related fields are a plus or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
  • Must possess valid driver license with an acceptable driving record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable skill in the use and operations of related hand and power tools, and the use of equipment to maintain the cleanliness of offices and city facilities.
  • Knowledge of related occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
  • Must be able to work independently and complete daily activities and tasks according to work schedule.
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public and fellow workers in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Must be fluent in English. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  • Must be a non-smoker.
  • The minimum requirements may be waived by the City Manager.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires physical strength and agility to perform assigned tasks, which include but are not limited to, bending, twisting, walking, climbing, reaching, lifting and carrying.
