Join our team to help prepare and maintain the Hampton Coliseum, American Theatre, Charles H. Taylor Art Center, and Hampton Aquaplex for world-class events. This hands-on role involves a mix of event setup, building upkeep, and general maintenance to ensure our venues are safe, clean, and ready to impress.

The purpose of the class is to prepare the Hampton Coliseum, the American Theatre, the Charles H. Taylor Art Center, and the Hampton Aquaplex for events and to perform general maintenance and housekeeping duties. The class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Typical task:

  • Set up and break down equipment for events - think stages, risers, tables, and more
  • Operate forklifts, scrubbers, sweepers, golf carts, and other tools to keep our facilities event-ready
  • Perform general building upkeep, including sweeping, mopping, painting, and trash removal
  • Support plumbing, carpentry, painting, and light electrical tasks
  • Conduct hourly building checks for safety and security
  • Lead and support housekeeping efforts during events

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school graduation or successful completion of GED.
  • One (1) year of full-time equivalent experience in building maintenance or a closely related experience is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances under the City's current substance abuse policy.
  • Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements:

  • May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
