The Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist are the first two levels in our Transportation Specialist Series. These positions are important in our work as they help maintain our roads and are crucial in our efforts to keep friends, family, and our communities traveling safely. In the summer, we focus on maintenance and repair, where in the winter, we focus on snow and ice removal, as well as other maintenance.

The Transportation Associate is a trainee position. In this role we train you on our work and, with successful performance, will promote you to the Transportation Generalist job title/classification after one year of training. Below are some examples of typical work for both the Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist roles. The actual day to day work will be assigned based on the project or immediate need in support of keeping our families, friends and communities traveling safely through all weather and seasonal conditions. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.

In the summer, this position may also focus on: Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance

  • Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides-installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.

  • Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and the traveling public.

  • Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadsideplanting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.

In the winter, this position may also focus on: Snow & Ice

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.

  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment-maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.

  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.

  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Hours of work

This is a full-time year-round position, with seasonal schedules (summer hours & winter hours). Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4-10s). Winter hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Hours of work may include days, nights, weekends and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions.

Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to assigned work locations within one hour of being called.

Minimum Qualifications

Have and maintain a valid MN Commercial Drivers License Class B with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement and the ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.

Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

  • Experience: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).

OR

  • Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.(In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

AND

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2: Candidates that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If youve previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.

NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-AM).

The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work nights; may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis. The employee will drive a motor vehicle in on & off road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting). The employee will occasionally operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may need to infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
