Job Title: Custodian
Reports To: Director of Facilities
Summary:
The custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, attractive, and comfortable environment conducive to learning, play, and development for students and staff.
Primary Responsibilities:
Building Maintenance
Under general supervision, the custodian is responsible for maintaining assigned areasincluding classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and shared spacesat a high standard of cleanliness and safety in accordance with established procedures. Duties include removing hazards that could lead to accidents or fires, conserving resources, and ensuring efficient use of supplies and utilities.
Student Support
Ensures a safe, clean, and welcoming environment that supports the physical and emotional well-being of students and promotes effective learning and development.
Essential Functions:
Perform daily and scheduled cleaning duties across assigned areas.
Assist external groups and organizations using school facilities.
Make minor repairs to equipment and furnishings as needed.
Perform general maintenance tasks, including but not limited to:
Snow removal and grass cutting
Window and glass cleaning (inside and out)
Replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles
Cleaning restrooms and water fountains
Dusting, vacuuming, and carpet cleaning
Floor care (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, buffing)
Support the delivery and unloading of supplies.
Provide assistance with light construction or special projects.
Collaborate with the maintenance team as needed.
Maintain the building and grounds, ensuring sidewalks, driveways, and play areas remain clean and hazard-free.
Monitor and regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain seasonal comfort while optimizing energy efficiency.
Ensure all exit doors are accessible and operational daily.
Report property damage or safety concerns to the principal immediately.
Maintain accurate inventory of custodial supplies and equipment; request replenishments in a timely manner.
Move furniture and equipment as required for events or operational needs.
Perform other duties as assigned that support the upkeep and function of the school building or district (NLCS).
Qualifications and Skills:
Demonstrated strong work ethic and responsibility.
Ability to consistently complete tasks with attention to detail and quality.
Aptitude and/or relevant experience in custodial or maintenance responsibilities.
Commitment to safety, cleanliness, and creating a supportive learning environment.
