This position requires a strong & dedicated individual to provide an essential contribution in keeping Salina's Public Works Department running efficiently. Our next Maintenance Worker II will operate & maintain a range of equipment-from powerful street sweepers to heavy-duty trucks-ensuring roads are safe & infrastructure robust. Responsibilities include leading work crews, managing storm debris, & maintaining street safety. This role is more than just a job; it's a vital position where hard work directly contributes to the strength & safety of Salina's community. This individual is under general supervision, will help performs street sweeping & is responsible for general maintenance of the street sweeper.

Duties:
- Performs street sweeping operations & variety of skilled & semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction & repair of public works, sanitation, utilities, flood control, public buildings & equipment.
- May oversee work crews in the absence of supervisors; may serve as lead worker.
- Operates & maintains light to heavy duty equipment including tandem trucks & other trucks over 28-ton capacity.
- Operates street sweepers, backhoes, front-end loaders, rollers, boom trucks & related equipment; uses a variety of hand & power tools.
- Patches streets; performs concrete work.
- Loads & hauls equipment, sand, gravel, asphalt & construction & maintenance materials.
- Assists on the flood control system; services & maintains flood control gates & pumps; makes plumbing repairs.
- Services & performs minor repairs to equipment; performs minor welding.
- Removes storm debris & snow; places barricades.
- Mows & trims trees, grass, weeds & shrubbery.
Education:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible work in the construction, maintenance & repair of public facilities or similar activities.
Requirements:
- Must live within 40 minutes response time.
- Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license at hire.
- Must possess a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsements, or obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work Type:
- Very heavy, exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Works in adverse weather conditions.
Machines, Tools, Equipment:
- Street sweeper, asphalt equipment, chain saws, dump trucks, front loader, heaters, hoses, jackhammer, motor grader, pickup, pumps, rakes, rollers, salt spreaders, shovels, tamps, tractor mowers, vibrators, & weed eaters.
Hours:
- Monday-Friday
- 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Work Special Events (Parades) & other emergency callouts.
Starting Pay DOQ EOE:
- $21.76-22.85/hr.
- $45,247-47,528/yr.
- Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
- 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
- 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
