Utility Worker

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the installation and repair of water mains, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, water lines; repairs, resurfaces and patches roads, bridges and alleys; may operate equipment in the performance of assigned tasks; may act as lead worker on certain assignments in directing the activities of other workers.

• Repairs, replaces and patches street surfaces, roads, bridges and alleys; installs and repairs water mains, hydrants, storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins and manholes and water services.

• Cleans and maintains catch basins, sewer pipes and water sewer jet trucks.

• Opens main sewers using sewer jet truck cleaner.

• Cuts and fits pipe, lowers and/or moves water mains, moves water services; caulks joints and excavates service leaks; backfills and jets trenches; pours concrete.

• Saws down and removes dead or storm damaged trees; hauls gravel and limestone for road work or stockpiling purposes.

• Operates a variety of equipment including snow plow, van, air compressors, jackhammers, drills, tampers, cement saw, tapping machine and other related tools and equipment of the trade; maintains, repairs and adjusts machinery, equipment and tools.

• Participates in salting and snow plowing operations; removes snow and ice from streets, parking lots, side walks, bridges, etc.

• Operates dump trucks and other miscellaneous large equipment.

• Maintains, repairs and paints equipment, storage facilities, containers, fences, windows and other related items.

• Repairs, replaces and erects street and traffic signs; digs post holes and sets or pulls posts; paints markings on street for center-line, crosswalks, traffic lanes, directional arrows and lettering on streets, cleans street and traffic signs and removes or covers graffiti from public and private facilities using appropriate chemicals and pressure washing equipment, communicates with the public, record keeping, JULIE locates, data entry, and assists with barricades/signs for traffic control.

• Performs other duties as required or assigned.

• Requires working knowledge of methods and procedures used in public works maintenance and repair operations

• Working knowledge in operation of vehicles used in public works activities

• Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, alleys and parking lots

• Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of a municipal water and sewer system, particularly water lines, sewer mains, fire hydrants, manholes and related facilities

• Working knowledge of City streets and locations with understanding of construction and the ability to determine the location of water and sewer mains, manholes, catch basins, valves and -fire hydrants; elementary knowledge of mechanics for the- operation; repair and maintenance of machinery, equipment and tools

• Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions connected with street, sewer and water maintenance or repair practices

• Ability to operate vehicles and equipment proficiently

• Ability to use standard maintenance equipment

• Manual dexterity necessary to operate, maintain and repair essential equipment and tools

• Ability to provide guidance and direction to subordinate maintenance personnel

• Ability to complete arduous tasks and work outdoors during inclement weather conditions

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have a high school diploma or a GED and one year experience in construction, public works maintenance and repair or a related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires possession of a valid Illinois Class A CDL Driver's License within 6 months of start date. City-sponsored training.
