Job Description
The a Custodian at the University of Notre Dame, you play a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across a variety of campus facilities, including academic, administrative, residential, athletic, and public spaces. This position is responsible for performing a full range of cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance tasks to ensure our buildings reflect the highest standards of cleanliness and care.
Key Responsibilities
Restroom & Shower Sanitation
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and shower areas, including toilets, urinals, partitions, shower stalls, sinks, mirrors, counters, and vents.
- Refill soap, towel, and tissue dispensers; scrub and mop floors; clean drains.
Floor Care
- Scrub, buff, burnish, strip, and refinish floors.
- Remove spots and stains from carpet and upholstery.
Waste Removal
- Collect and dispose of trash and recyclable materials.
- Deposit waste in designated dumpsters and compactors; break down boxes; maintain interior and exterior waste collection areas.
General Cleaning
- Vacuum carpeted areas; sweep, dust, dust mop, and damp mop hard-surface floors.
- Clean mirrors, ledges, windows, walls, doors, water fountains, chalk/white boards, vents, and light fixtures.
- Maintain cleanliness of interior/exterior entrances, stairs, and exits; remove snow and apply ice melt around entryways as needed.
Miscellaneous Duties
- Lock/unlock designated doors; clean kitchen appliances where appropriate.
- Assist with emergency clean-ups, special requests, and event set-ups.
- Move furniture for cleaning; make occasional bed preparations.
- Operate and maintain cleaning equipment; report maintenance needs.
- Participate in safety trainings and meetings; maintain professional communication with staff via radio and computer.
- Alert security to suspicious activity when necessary.
Work Environment
This position requires working in a variety of settings-academic, residential, athletic, and public spaces-and may include exposure to cleaning chemicals, varying temperatures, and occasional outdoor conditions.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior custodial or building maintenance experience desirable.
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment and follow safety procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
