Custodian and Grounds General Laborer

The Custodian and Grounds General Laborer is responsible for performing custodial duties, general maintenance, and grounds upkeep as required of campus facilities and ground maintenance at college locations as assigned.

  • Cleans, sweeps, mops, vacuums, dusts, polishes, deodorizes, sanitizes, and removes trash in offices, classrooms, bathrooms, halls, and other areas in all College buildings.
  • Cleans lavatories and toilets using cleansers and sanitizing solutions.
  • Disposes of waste paper and other discards; collects and places trash in the appropriate trash pickup area.
  • Maintains campus grounds, streets, curbs, and parking lots, including but not limited to cutting grass, weed-eating, hedge trimming, and grounds upkeep.
  • Assists with locking and securing all buildings as directed.
  • Drives and operates college vans, trucks, and equipment as assigned.
  • Serves as a mail courier for all mail between campuses as assigned.
  • Sweeps steps and sidewalks adjacent to buildings.
  • Shampoos or spot cleans carpets and rugs, using a rug shampooing machine, brush, or cloth, and cleaning solutions.
  • Ensures adequate supply of materials and supplies is available.
  • Performs basic facility maintenance duties, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, air filters, etc.
  • Inspects assigned areas and corrects or reports safety hazards.
  • Cleans and maintains grounds, paved areas, paths, walkways, and stairways as instructed.
  • Maintains inventory of materials and supplies and prepares material and equipment estimates for assignments.
  • Maintains work sites in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment.
  • Secures worksites from traffic hazards as necessary.
  • Prepares basic records and reports of completed work, vandalism, and maintenance requests.
  • Assists campus visitors and answers inquiries about the location of buildings and properties.
  • Participates and serves on various committees and attends meetings as instructed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the President, Executive Director of Financial Services, and the Coordinator of Maintenance & Custodial Services.
  • Adheres to the policies, rules, and standards of Reid State Technical College, Alabama Community College System, accrediting agencies, and federal regulatory bodies.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work environment characteristics and physical demands described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must follow all safety requirements carefully and wear any personal protective equipment applicable. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is required.
  • Knowledge of custodial and maintenance practices, procedures, and equipment is required.
  • Reading skills to understand policies, procedures, operator manuals, label directions, and related material are required.
  • Listening skills to comprehend verbal instructions are required.
  • A valid Alabama driver's license is required.
  • Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work assignment is required.
  • The ability to use independent judgment and initiative in daily work activities is required.
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing with groups of people from diverse backgrounds is required.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repair, custodial maintenance, and grounds upkeep or related areas is preferred.
