Under the supervision of the Stormwater supervisor , and with lead direction and guidance from the Culvert Inspection Program Coordinator, a Transportation Engineer (Civil), and guidance from the Culverts Asset Management Branch Chief a Senior Transportation Engineer , the Culvert Inspector is responsible for conducting field inspections of the culvert/drainage systems in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The incumbent assesses physical condition of culverts, recommends maintenance strategies, assists in data processing, researches existing conditions, operates technical equipment, quality control and equipment maintenance and interacts with a variety of functional units in Headquarters (HQ) and within District 11 (District). Incumbent is expected to primarily work in small teams, and is responsible for the timely, accurate, and efficient delivery of all assigned work. The incumbent may be required to work overtime, work irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends; may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts and required to respond to emergency situations and calls.

Working Conditions

Position located at District 11/Maintenance Division/West Region,San Diego County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Work is accomplished in a variety of settings. While in the office setting, the incumbent works in a climate-controlled environment with artificial lighting and temperature control. However, due to periodic issues with heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. While performing field work, the incumbent is required to travel throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties to seek access to culverts/drainage inlets and outlets in and out in remote areas, along the travel way of highways, wetlands, in heavy construction zones, mountain tops and on the property of private citizens. Inlets are often located in freeway medians and roadside edges. There is a potential for exposure to snakes and other wildlife, poison oak, ticks, and other insects. Incumbent may be required to travel within the State to attend training, but out of District travel is not frequent. The incumbent must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely. Work is performed on a variety of terrain(s) including but not limited to slopes. The incumbent is also subjected to all weather conditions, including the desert heat in the Summer and the mountain cold in the Winter. A valid driver's license is required to operate a State owned or leased vehicle.

New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.
