JOB SUMMARY
Performs routine and non-routine cleaning in an assigned area or areas to provide the proper building sanitation by following prescribed cleaning frequencies. Provides project work periodically and responds to other miscellaneous requests submitted by faculty and staff. Performs work under limited supervision performing routine cleaning and minor maintenance tasks by using prescribed chemicals, hand tools and machines in order to keep the school building and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Directs, coordinates, supervises, schedules and inspects the work of all subordinate personnel. A close working relationship with the building administrators is both a critical and core component of this position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Serves as immediate supervisor over Environmental Services Staff;
- Oversees, coordinates and participates in activities of Environmental Services engaged in cleaning of premises, furniture and equipment, minor routine maintenance and repair activities, using hand tools, monitor and check heating and cooling complaints, and all other custodial related tasks;
- Maintain yearly and monthly budget;
- Remove snow and ice from walkways, parking lots and any other areas as needed;
- Monitor and distribute cleaning supplies;
- Requisitions cleaning supplies and submits requests for repair of equipment to building administrator;
- Assists building administrator(s) in the performance evaluations of Environmental Services Staff;
- Adheres to proper cleaning methods, storage, proper care and disposal of equipment and supplies;
- Inspects building and notifies building administrator on condition of property and need for repairs;
- Set up, coordinate and cleanup during the lunch period;
- Trains and/or provides for employee training, as requested;
- Design and implement special events, programs and summer work;
- React to immediate and urgent building needs as soon as possible;
- Respond to staff request through email, phone or face to face encounters;
- Coordinate with building administration and staff members;
- Assists building administrator in scheduling, coordinating and planning work assignments;
- Takes primary responsibility for opening and/or securing the building, including weekends, to provide protection against vandalism and theft;
- Attends in-service training to develop and improve knowledge and skills of building service work;
- Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times;
- Promotes and monitors the use and wearing of safety and/or protective equipment, as needed;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, visitors, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the building administrator(s) immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible;
- Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
- Performs all duties as listed in the job description of Environmental Services;
- Performs other duties as requested as assigned by the building administrator(s) in accordance with school/division policies and practices; and
- Performs other assigned duties.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Candidate must possess any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and must possess experience in building cleaning;
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to get along well with others.
- Ability to effectively direct, oversee, coordinate, schedule and inspect the work of all other Environmental Services personnel.
- Ability to react to immediate and urgent building needs.
- Ability to use a computer daily for emails, Microsoft word, Google services.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn routine and non-routine cleaning methods, procedures, and equipment usage.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Custodians are required to report to work as directed in the event of a school closure or late opening.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed walking or standing. This work includes, but not limited to stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling and lifting. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to approximately 25 pounds frequently and up to approximately 75 pounds occasionally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise and hazards. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Environmental Services Staff are in daily contact with teachers, students, administration, the general public and other work-related personnel. The ability to coordinate and prioritize work activity, handle complaints, express a service-oriented attitude, communicate effectively, and work with limited supervision. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardous substances.
EVALUATION:
The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
