Position Title: Food Service Assistant #9

Location: Howell High School

Reports To: Food Service Director and/or Principal/Assistant Principal

Status: Ten (10) month position

First day of school for students - Last day of school for students

Extended Work Hours: 4.25 hrs/day; 9:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Hours: 3.75 hrs/day; 10:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

SUMMARY:

The Food Service Assistant provides support in our student nutrition program by assisting the Kitchen Manager and the Food Service Supervisor in the overall management and organization of the food service program all while providing excellent customer service to staff, students and families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Main responsibility is to do dishes and keep the dish room clean and sanitized including the dish machine.
  • Gather any dirty dishes at the beginning of the shift and after each lunch and take them to the dish room.
  • Always scrub and take food particles from dishes. Wash, rinse and sanitize dishes or use the dish machine. Let the dishes air dry. Do not use a towel to dry. Make sure they are dry before putting them away.
  • Check all dishes for cleanliness. Dishes must be clean before putting them away.
  • Put dishes away. Make sure dishes are always put in the same spot.
  • Make sure all food is ground down the garbage disposal and disposal drain area. Clean and sanitize.
  • Crush cans and keep the can crusher and area clean and sanitized inside and out including legs.
  • Take dirty towels from the rack in the storeroom and put them in the laundry basket.
  • Clean ceiling tiles, walls, roll up windows in kitchen and dish room as needed.
  • Help serve during lunch when needed. If not serving during lunches, using a cast gather other dirty dishes from serving lines/prep areas and continue doing dishes and putting them away.
  • Empty cardboard/trash rack mid-morning. Take cardboard to the recycle bin and trash to the compactor.
  • Fit in a 15 minute paid lunch break.
  • Clean windows and bottom of shelves by dishwasher and three compartment sink.
  • Help empty outer-building carts, clean and sanitize and take dirty dishes to the dish room.
  • Empty dish machine, clean and sanitize inside and out & on top.
  • Clean & sanitize 3 compartment sinks and dish room station.
  • Turn off lights & fans.
  • One a week clean dish machine curtains, clean shelves that have pots, pans, and trays on them.
  • Once a week, delime dish machine.
  • Once a week, assist FSA#10 pick up floor mats in the dishroom area, sweep and mop.
  • Help clean coolers, ovens, hot carts, and other equipment according to schedule.
  • Clean kitchen bathroom per schedule set by Kitchen Manager.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Regular, predictable in-person attendance.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Kitchen Manager or Food Service Supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

High school diploma (or equivalent); and must pass a basic math skills test.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English language;
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions;
  • Ability to work with the general public and students.

COMPUTER SKILLS :

  • Basic computer skills.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of District requirements and Board policies / administrative guidelines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, speaking clearly and communicating thoughts succinctly;
  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism with minimal supervision;
  • Accurate and detail oriented; and
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, administration and the school community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to coordinate hands, eyes, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as cooking, washing dishes and operation of a computer keyboard, cash register, and telephone. The employee is required to be on his/her feet walking around the cafeteria and food service department building for several hours at a time. The employee is required to exert physical effort in work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, walking, standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds from floor to waist height. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY :

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud. The work environment is normally indoors with controlled climate conditions. Occasionally the employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and therefore subject to varying weather conditions, for purposes of accomplishing the essential functions of this job. This position requires the employee to work in different building cafeteria and food service departments as needed. The ability to travel via employee’s automobile between buildings is required.
