Custodian and Bus Driver

This position is 20 hours a week custodian at Millingport and 20 hours a week bus driver for the district. The custodial position is 12 months a year. Bus driver positions are only 10 months a year. Priority will be given to this bus driver for summer school routes to extend employment into the summer as available.

General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Work involves the transferring of equipment, custodial, instrument repair and audiovisual.

Essential Job Functions

  • Scrubs, dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, waxes and polishes floors in rooms, hallways and closets.
  • Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures.
  • Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens and classroom facilities.
  • Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Empties wastebaskets and other refuse receptacles.
  • Locks and unlocks doors.
  • Sorts and stores material for recycling programs.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture or facilities. Reports to supervisor damages or needed repairs requiring outside attention.
  • Turns heating and air conditioning equipment on and off.
  • Performs routine maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Performs other duties as deemed appropriate and assigned by the supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of procedures to operate heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Skill in the use of small equipment used in routine cleaning.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relations.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral or written directions.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Some experience in housekeeping
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be phyically able to lift up to a minmum of 50 pounds
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
  • Physical demand requirements are for medium work

Reports To: Transportation Route Coordinator/ Director of Transportation

General Statement of Job

  • Performs semi skilled work operating a school bus, transporting students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Route Coordinator.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs pre- and post-trip school bus inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Transports students to and from school, along with other activities and events.
  • Cleans the bus inside and out including washing, sweeping, emptying trash, etc.
  • Fuels the bus as needed.
  • Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations for school bus operations.
  • Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
  • Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.
  • Records mileage; maintains records and reports.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.
  • Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience with at least 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Applicable training will be provided.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with passenger and bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
  • Must hold Commercial Driver’s License with P and S Endorsement.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
