Basic Functions: To perform and be responsible for the general cleaning and custodial functions at an assigned school site in the District. Employees in this classification receive direct supervision from a school site administrator and technical supervision from the Maintenance and Operations Manager or his/her designate within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this classification exercise responsibility for the general cleanliness of an assigned school site to include requisitioning of custodial supplies and materials. This job class is responsible for all custodial activities at the assigned school site.

Typical Duties:

  • Performs general cleaning and custodial functions as assigned
  • Inspects assigned school site and reports to the school administrator as to the condition of the facility
  • Requisitions cleaning and custodial supplies for assigned facility
  • Locks and unlocks doors and gates to insure security of school buildings and related areas; turns on/off alarms
  • Moves, adjusts and/or arranges furniture or equipment
  • Cleans classrooms, restrooms, eating areas, offices and related facilities
  • Cleans walls, furniture, windows, blackboards, woodwork and other equipment
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile, wood floors, door panels, and hand railings
  • Vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets
  • Dusts furniture, empties and cleans trash receptacles
  • Cleans drinking fountains
  • Reports safety, sanitary and/or fire hazards to appropriate authority
  • Picks up papers or debris; rakes, sweeps, waters grounds and cleans walkways and entrances
  • Sets up gymnasium equipment and sound systems
  • Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, scrubbers,
  • Observes and reports the need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority
  • Responds to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains and performs minor building maintenance repairs as required
  • Inspects assigned areas for safety and security purposes reporting vandalism to appropriate authority
  • Performs special custodial work upon request of faculty members
  • May be used as substitute custodian at various schools throughout the District
  • May assist and perform routine grounds keeping duties as required
    • Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and moving heavy furniture and equipment, which may weigh up to 50 lbs. on a daily basis and may occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.

Employment Standards:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of District policies and procedures related to custodian work
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations associated with custodian work
  • Knowledge of routine security practices and policies of the District
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in an independent manner
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Ability to safely operate and apply custodial equipment, materials and chemicals
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
