Position Title: Food Service Assistant #1

Location: Howell High School

Reports To: Kitchen Manager, Food Service Director and/or Principal/Assistant Principal

Status: Ten (10) month position

First day of school for students - Last day of school for students

Work Hours: 4.25 hours (9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) Could change to Base Work Hours: 3.75 hours (10:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

SUMMARY :

The Food Service Assistant provides support in our student nutrition program by working in our school cafeterias by preparing and/or serving food, handling food purchase transactions, cleaning and sanitizing all items and areas within the department, all while providing excellent customer service to staff and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must move into Manager’s position when manager is absent.
  • Clean and sanitize work space before and after doing food prep.
  • Check the menu to see what vegetables are offered for the day. Prepare menued vegetables for all serving lines and place in the cold wells. Record quantities on all of the Food Production Records (FPR).
  • Bag cookies, then pan up cookies for the next day and push the rack back into the freezer.
  • Run a register OR help serve during all lunch periods. If cashiering, perform a cash out procedure at the end of the last lunch and take the cash drawer to the office.
  • Keep work space clean and sanitized.
  • In between lunches, check to see if more vegetables are needed.
  • Check the menu again to see if any vegetable items can be prepped for the next day.
  • Record any drops or discards of food items on FPR.
  • Take dirty dishes to the dishroom as needed.
  • Once the last lunch is finished, record leftover vegetables on all of the Food Production Records. Properly wrap and date mark any usable leftover items and put away in designated cooler.
  • Wipe down tables out in the cafeteria and commons.
  • Wipe down cart and push into large storeroom.
  • Fit in a 15 minute paid lunch break.
  • Take afternoon temperatures of all cooler and freezer temps and record.
  • Must fill in for Food Service Assistant #4 when absent; leaving at 1:00pm to collect money, paperwork and any supplies from schools.
  • Empty outer-building carts, clean and sanitize and take dirty dishes to the dish room.
  • Sweep and mop the back kitchen area all the way to the back door area and all aisles.
  • Once a week, pick up floor mats in the dishroom area, sweep and mop and once a week sweep and mop two offices.
  • Help clean coolers, ovens, hot carts, and other equipment according to schedule.
  • Clean kitchen bathroom per schedule set by Kitchen Manager.
    Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Regular, predictable in-person attendance.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Kitchen Manager or Food Service Supervisor.

Note: Food Service Employees running a register must maintain confidentiality regarding student accounts and need to keep all computer register components clean and free of dust. This includes: computer register/monitor, keyboard, mouse, cord and computer stand.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • High school diploma (or equivalent); and must pass a basic math skills test.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English language;
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions;
  • Ability to work with the general public and students.

COMPUTER SKILLS :

  • Basic computer skills. Keep computer, monitor, monitor station, cords and mouse clean, sanitized and free of dust.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of District requirements and Board policies / administrative guidelines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, speaking clearly and communicating thoughts succinctly;
  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism with minimal supervision;
  • Accurate and detail oriented; and
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, administration and the school community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to coordinate hands, eyes, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as cooking, washing dishes and operation of a computer keyboard, cash register, and telephone. The employee is required to be on his/her feet walking around the cafeteria and food service department building for several hours at a time. The employee is required to exert physical effort in work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, walking, standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to25 pounds from floor to waist height. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY :

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud. The work environment is normally indoors with controlled climate conditions. Occasionally the employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and therefore subject to varying weather conditions, for purposes of accomplishing the essential functions of this job. This position requires the employee to work in different building cafeteria and food service departments as needed. The ability to travel via employee’s automobile between buildings is required.
