The City of Verona, Department of Parks and Urban Forestry is recruiting to fill a Parks Maintenance Worker vacancy. The Parks Maintenance Worker position is responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks related to the construction and maintenance of city parks, property and recreational facilities. The position is also responsible for performing daily maintenance and repairs of park and forestry equipment and related work as required.

Examples of the specific tasks of the Park Maintenance Worker include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain and repair park and forestry equipment including mowers, trucks, tractors, saws, string trimmers, etc.
- Maintain park shelters, recreational facilities and perform general maintenance
of other city facilities as needed. Perform winter snow removal on City sidewalks and facilities. - Operate machinery used in park operations including skid steer, backhoe, loader, tractor, and dump truck.
- Fabricate, weld, and paint steel for various park projects.
- Remove trash, rocks, tree branches, leaves and any other hazards within the park system and other city grounds.
- Plant and trim trees and shrubs and mow grass.
- Construct, install and develop playground equipment, athletic fields, benches, picnic tables, etc., within the park system and city grounds.
- Operate transit and/or laser level.
- Assist in taking inventory of parks and recreation equipment.
- Prepare athletic fields and clean shelters on weekends as needed.
- Assist the public works crew on various jobs when needed.
- Supervise seasonal crews, train, and delegate appropriate work tasks to LTE employees.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Additional job duties that may be assigned to Parks Maintenance Workers include the following:
Arborist Duties:
1. Plant, prune and maintain street trees and boulevard areas within the City.
2. Diagnose and treat plant disease and insect problems.
3. Fertilize, spray, aerate, seed and sod all parks, recreational facilities, and other
city grounds as needed.
Equipment Operator Duties
1. Proficiently operate machinery used in park operations including skid steer,
excavator, loader, tractor, and dump truck.
2. Excavate, grade, and prepare gravel areas for stone paths as well as concrete
and asphalt paving.
Mechanic Duties
1. Perform daily maintenance on all park equipment including trucks, tractors,
mowers, and small engines.
2. Diagnose and repair broken equipment.
3. Respond to and repair emergency breakdowns in the field as needed.
4. Maintain repair records and schedule routine maintenance as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : The Park Maintenance Worker must have the following:
- Knowledge of the purpose and needs for a park system.
- Proficiency in the operation of construction machinery such as skid steer loaders, trucks and trailers, tractors, and snow removal equipment.
- Experience in basic landscaping procedures such as tree and shrub planting and care, wall construction, bed preparation, seeding, and sodding.
- Knowledge and skill to maintain and repair vehicles, mowers and other equipment.
- Working knowledge and familiarity with building trades including carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and concrete flatwork.
- Ability to perform a variety of janitorial tasks including but not limited to bathroom cleaning, mopping, sweeping, trash removal, and graffiti removal.
- Ability to cut, weld, torch, and fabricate steel.
- Knowledge of and ability to read blueprints, plan drawings, and repair manuals.
- Knowledge of basic surveying techniques and procedures.
- Ability to work alone and with other people to accomplish projects properly.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to maintain a working relationship with other employees, officials and the general public.
- Ability to use a computer to enter data and maintain records.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High school diploma/GED or equivalency is required.
2. Experience in parks/grounds maintenance is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience in equipment maintenance and/or operation is preferred.
2. Experience in welding, landscaping, working with concrete, carpentry, electrical work,
and plumbing is preferred.
3. Supervisory experience is preferred.
4. Pesticide applicator and arborist certification is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
1. A valid Class B commercial drivers license (CDL), or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date is required.
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Work is performed outdoors (75%) and requires that tasks be performed in cold and inclement weather. Work is performed indoors in a workshop (25%). The Park Maintenance Worker must meet the following physical standards:
1. Sit at a table or desk
2. Stand and walk for extended periods
3. Bend, crouch and stoop
4. Intermittently sit, stand, walk and bend
5. Lift objects weighing less than 75 pounds
6. Sit and ride lawn mowers, tractors, trucks, backhoe, loaders and skid steer
7. Climb ladders and enter vehicles
8. Shovel, rake, dig into dirt and snow
9. Availability to respond to snow and other emergencies as needed at any time
Trucks with hoists and plows, aerial lift trucks, snow blowers, drills, saws, trimmers, tractors, pulverizes, fertilizers, lawn mowers, backhoe, loader, skid steer, sewer jetter, ice scrapers, box scrapers, roto tillers, and other street, sidewalk and park maintenance equipment.
