Cooking in Senior Living is very rewarding and satisfying.
- You should be able to follow recipes and be able to scale up or down appropriately.
- Be able to use common sense and good cooking knowledge to make adjustments in seasonings.
- Have a basic understanding and willingness to adhere to the types of diets: mechanical soft, lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian, etc.
- Be able to read and follow individual menus at meal service time, placing the correct items on each plate in a pleasing and appetizing manner.
- Be able to use scratch and speed scratch cooking techniques.
- Time management is a must: you must be able to multitask (cook more than one thing at a time), prioritize your tasks, work efficiently and quickly. You must be able prepare and serve meals on time.
- Be flexible and able to make substitutions.
- Pay close attention to station cleanliness and safety and be able to follow a daily cleaning and closing checklist.
- Be able to wash dishes and leave your station the way you want it left for you.
- Be consistent, on-time, reliable and pleasant.
- Notify food service director of any malfunctioning kitchen equipment or appliances.
- Visit with residents at each meal when available and ensure quality service.
- Prepare food and coordinate food service for special events as requested.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
- Experience in cooking for large groups
- Certificate in food-preparation training preferred
- Desire to work with senior adults
