Nature of Work
Performs routine manual tasks in the upkeep and sanitization of public facilities. Responsibilities include custodial duties and light building maintenance, often physically demanding and performed both indoors and outdoors. Tasks follow established protocols, though guidance may be provided for atypical assignments. Work quality is overseen by the Director of Public Works or the Public Works Field Superintendent.
Essential DutiesSweep, mop, scrub, and polish floors using hand tools and machinery; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
Dust, polish, arrange, and relocate furniture and equipment.
Clean walls, windows, and woodwork.
Sanitize restrooms, restock consumables, and maintain fixtures.
Replace light bulbs and polish metal surfaces.
May operate a city vehicle when required.
Collect and dispose of garbage and paper waste inside and outside facilities.
Perform minor repairs, such as touch-up painting, motor lubrication, filter replacement, and basic plumbing fixes; monitor equipment and escalate serious maintenance needs.
Carry out additional related tasks as required.
Prior experience in general custodial duties or related roles; experience with minor maintenance and repairs preferred.
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred; or any combination of education and experience that imparts:
Familiarity with cleaning materials, methods, equipment, and procedures.
Basic proficiency using standard maintenance hand tools.
Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
Careful and safe handling of cleaning agents.
Frequent reaching, standing, walking, and manual handling of tools and equipment.
Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, and listening.
Regular lifting of commercial-size trash bags (5060 lbs.), and occasional lifting exceeding 100 lbs.
Capable of moving office furniture such as chairs and small tables, and handling large cleaning equipment.
Requires close vision and the ability to adjust visual focus.

Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and high or unstable locations.
Potential contact with wet/humid conditions, airborne particles, fumes, and chemicals.
Possible risk of electrical shock.
