Job Description

Join the team that keeps the University of Notre Dame's campus beautiful, safe, and thriving year-round!

As a Groundskeeper, you'll play a hands-on role in shaping and maintaining one of the most iconic landscapes in higher education! From mowing lush green spaces and planting vibrant floral displays to tackling snow and ice in the winter months, every day brings new challenges and rewards.

From powerful mowers to precision tools, you'll use a variety of equipment to help bring each season to life and keep the campus looking exceptional!

Key Responsibilities

Landscape Maintenance

Mow and maintain over 350 acres of campus turf.
Trim and maintain shrubs, trees (including removal and stump grinding), and flower beds.
Remove and recycle approximately 50,000 cubic yards of leaves annually.
Install plants and flowers for new construction, renovations, and seasonal displays.
Maintain irrigation systems using communication tools such as radios, iPhones, and iPads.
Collect and dispose of trash and refuse across campus, including roads and parking lots.
Aerate and fertilize turf, shrub beds, and flower beds.
Apply pesticides as needed.
Operate a wide range of landscaping equipment, including but not limited to:
Front-end loaders, Bobcat Toolcat, backhoe, tractors.
Dingo auger, trenchers, leaf vacuums, limb chippers, stump grinders.
High ranger, utility carts, ride-on and push mowers, sprayers.
Chainsaws, string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, sidewalk edgers.
Perform routine equipment maintenance: inspections, greasing, and cleaning.

Snow & Ice Removal / Emergency Response

Clear ice and snow from sidewalks, roadways, parking lots, loading docks, stairways, and accessible ramps.
Apply de-icing materials.
Respond to campus emergencies and requests from campus security.
Participate in storm damage cleanup and graffiti removal.
On-call availability 24/7 from December 1 through April 1.
Operate all department snow and ice removal equipment.

Additional Duties

Participate in annual training sessions as assigned.
Perform other duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: 6-12 months of relevant experience
Preferred Skills:
Prior groundskeeping or landscaping experience.
Comfort using various landscaping tools and equipment.
Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.

Additional Information

Hiring Pay Range: Up to $20.00 / Hour

Note: Overtime opportunities are available during the winter season (December-April 1) for snow and ice removal.
