Front Desk Receptionist - Activity Center

The Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture is seeking applicants for the position of part-time Front Desk Receptionist for weekday, weekend, and evening shifts at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park , a busy recreational facility.
This is an ongoing year-round position . The Activity Center is open seven days a week. Shifts are normally 4 to 5 hours per scheduled day; however, on occasion up to 8 hours. The normal workweek is 8-10 hours per week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. You must be able to work year-round and have flexibility to work any day of the week.

The Activity Center Receptionist answers telephones and directs incoming calls to the appropriate party; greets and assists visitors; performs data entry tasks and processes fees and payments associated with registrations, admissions, and memberships; completes routine office and administrative tasks in support of department projects and programs; and contributes to a positive and enjoyable experience for all who contact or visit the facility.
We are looking for someone who is positive and customer focused; an effective communicator (verbal and written); reliable and punctual; willing and able to take on a variety of responsibilities; and who can interact with customers and staff in a pleasant, professional, and courteous manner. Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in English and Spanish desirable. Starting hourly rate is negotiable within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees. What you will do with us:
  • Answer the telephone and receive and greet visitors; direct calls and visitors to their proper destination.
  • Create and maintain customer accounts and perform data entry tasks.
  • Receive and process registrations, applications, permits, and memberships.
  • Process payments and maintain spreadsheets for ticket, admissions, and merchandise sales.
  • Receive payments and maintain cash management systems to insure accountability and controls.
  • Respond to routine inquiries and provide general information.
  • Accept or direct deliveries of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain calendars, records, and files as directed.
  • Perform routine office assistance tasks such as filing, copying, faxing, and scanning when requested.
  • Provide outstanding service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.

  • Ability to work year-round and any day of the week.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience as a front desk receptionist and performing general administrative or clerical duties.
  • Cash handling and management experience.
  • Data entry and processing experience.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office products) and ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification (may be obtained through the City after hire).
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in English and Spanish desirable.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties and functions.
