Building Custodian (Part-Time)

Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work in a variety of building maintenance assignments; frequently operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the sanitation supervisor.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Performs general building maintenance activities; operating equipment, maintaining and repairing buildings; performing carpentry and plumbing maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting, paint walls, ceiling, doors, windows, cabinets and equipment;
  • Performs basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical and plumbing repair and maintenance work;
  • Changes bulbs, replaces ballasts;
  • Maintains grounds, including mowing and trimming;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
General knowledge of maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; general knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventative maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment required in the work; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods; ability to follow instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. 20-29 hours per week (hours vary)Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and considerable experience as a semiskilled or skilled worker in the maintenance, repair and/or construction activity to which assigned.

Possession of an appropriate drivers license valid in the State of North Carolina
