Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

MSD Cook II is an intermediate level of work in the Dietary Department of the Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus. The Cook II is responsible for the production and serving of meals in accordance with the facility's Food Safety Program and Wellness Policy; all Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus, and Dietary Department prescribed policies and procedures; and all applicable health and sanitation regulations and standards.\n

POSITION DUTIES

Prepares foods requiring both simple and complex preparation.\n\n\nAssembles trayline\nand serve meals according to established scheduled daily menu, using correct portion sizes and\ntechniques.\n\n\nCleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment.\n\n\nPrepares food items\nsuch as vegetables, salads, meats, and beverages by baking, frying, broiling,\nsteaming, and mixing in accordance with recipes and dietetic guidelines.\n\n\nApplies good service\nprinciples and methods related to food handling, proper food storage, and\ntemperature control.\n\n\nOperates kitchen\nequipment and appliances, such as mixers, cookers, ovens, stoves, toasters,\ncoffee urns, microwaves, and related equipment.\n\n\nCleans and maintains\nutensils and work area in accordance with applicable safety and sanitary\nstandards.\n\n\nProtects equipment,\nutensils, food, and other items from contamination, spoilage, and pilferage.\n\n\nKeeps records of\nsupplies used and number of persons served.\n\n\nMay train, assign, and\nreview the work of Dietary Workers or Food Service Assistants in cooking\ntechniques.\n\n\nPerforms other related duties, must be flexible to provide timely assistance for an efficient food service operation.\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

\nEducation: None.\n\n\nExperience: Three years of experience in food preparation at a public or governmental establishment, such as a restaurant, hospital or comparable institution involving the cooking of meats and vegetables and the preparation of salads and beverages.\n\n\nNotes:\n1.Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in food service or a related field for up to two years of the required experience.\n\n\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in culinary classifications or food service specialty codes in the food preparation and serving field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\n\n\n\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be proficient in\nor willing to learn ASL.\n\n\nMust be able to lift\n50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.\n\n\nServe Safe food handler\ncertification preferred.\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates must be willing to become Serve Safe Certified.\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

BENEFITS

\nContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\nLeave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\n\n
