UW Recreation is a department within the Division of Student Life. We provide safe, accessible, and dynamic recreation experiences to engage students in growth and wellbeing. UW Recreation serves over one million students, faculty, and staff each academic year through informal and formal recreation, including fitness and sports classes, intramural and club sports, outdoor education, mindfulness programs, and more.

SUMMARY:

The custodian performs a variety of custodial tasks to maintain clean, sanitary, and safe conditions in and around UW Recreation facilities. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Facilities and will work under the direction of the Lead Custodian. The work schedule may vary but it is typically Friday-Tuesday 9:30pm-6:00am.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following represents a variety of the responsibilities assigned to the person in this position. The examples represent typical work but are not intended to be inclusive of all duties required for this position.

Use and maintain hand tools and power equipment such as brooms, mops, squeegees, vacuums, carpet cleaners, floor machines, power washers, and other tools required for the cleaning and general maintenance of the UW Recreation facilities.

Utilize a computer for online training, reporting facility issues, and relaying information.

Clean and sanitize restrooms, showers, drying areas, and the fixtures located in these areas.

Empty wastebaskets and trash containers and assist with the campus-wide recycling and composting program.

Sweep, dry and wet mop, scrub, and condition vinyl floor, terrazzo, ceramic floor tiles, hardwood floors, and other floor surfaces. Vacuum and shampoo carpets and furniture.

Replace toilet paper, paper towels, and other restroom supplies as needed.

Clean walls, windows, mirrors, vents, display cases, etc.

Set-up and remove furniture and sports equipment for special events.

Perform custodial maintenance of office areas, kitchenette, stairwells, pool, locker rooms, activity areas, and sauna.

Read and follow instructions and labels regarding chemicals, cleaners and supplies, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.

Maintain building security when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and unauthorized occupants.

Work cooperatively with other members of the UW Recreation staff in the interest of providing a comprehensive program of activities designed to meet the needs and interest of the University community. Attend staff meetings and required trainings as needed.

Perform related duties as required, including weekly, monthly, or annual custodial projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Physical ability to do the required work

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience as a Custodian or housekeeper. Equivalent experience may substitute.

Ability to understand and produce written and verbal instructions in English

Ability to effectively interact and communicate in a variety of situations

Work independently with minimal supervision

Detail oriented
