Head Custodian

8 hours per day/Mon-Fri/260 days in full work year

Position Serves Clarkes Elementary School

JOB GOAL: The goal of the Head Custodian is to supervise, train and mentor the school’s custodial team (if applicable) and oversee the school building and grounds to ensure a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, efficient and well-maintained, positive learning environment for students. The Head Custodian also performs minor repairs, seasonal and daily routine maintenance and cleaning.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed for the position.
1. Possess supervisory skills and, if applicable, the ability to effectively supervise the custodial staff and substitutes.
2. Ability to:

  • effectively mentor, train, and schedule custodial staff and substitutes.
  • understand and follow oral and written instructions and effectively communicate them to others.
  • work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively, in English, (both orally and in writing) with staff, students, and families.
  • supervise and perform light maintenance and repairs (i.e., plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc.).
  • work independently, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining schedules and attending to details.
  • use cleaning materials and equipment with skill, efficiency, and safety.
  • ensure proper operation of heating and lighting systems.
  • requisition, account for, and maintain the inventory for supplies and equipment.
  • perform basic clerical skills to complete required reports in accordance with building/district policies and procedures (i.e. safety, fire drills, vandalism, maintenance, etc.).
  • maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.

3. Knowledge of:

  • cleaning methods and the use, routine care and maintenance and safety of cleaning materials and equipment used in building custodial and light maintenance work.
  • the requirements for maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • familiarity with handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

4. Perform physical requirements which may include:

  • moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping and crawling.
  • exposure to conditions, including outdoor weather, and where heating, cooling, and ventilation may be inadequate at times.
  • exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, odors and the possibility of minor electrical shock.
  • ability to lift and move furniture, desks, shelving, staging and cleaning supplies.
  • ability to walk to various locations within the school building and the grounds.
  • ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, tractors, lawn mowers, district vehicles, forklift, power tools and other equipment as needed.
  • ability to climb ladders, stretch, bend, stoop and crawl to perform a variety of cleaning and repairs including painting, and cleaning roof, gutters, and drains.
  • ability to work primarily in a standing position for extended periods of time.
  • possible exposure to bodily fluids when cleaning due to student illness or injury.

5. Three years’ experience in school custodial and/or maintenance work.
6. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as deemed appropriate and acceptable by the School Board or Administration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
1. Supervise other building custodians, if applicable, including determining and communicating assigned cleaning routes and schedules. Adjust schedules as needed to cover for both planned and unplanned absences thereby eliminating any lapse in service.
2. Plan and prepare long and short-term preventative maintenance and cleaning schedules to ensure that annual, semiannual, monthly and weekly tasks are completed, in addition to routine daily tasks, on time and in accordance with expectations to meet building and district standards.
3. Manage all building work orders in conjunction with building administrator and facilities manager and collaborate with building administrator, facilities manager and facilities administrative assistant to acquire tools, materials and other resources needed to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
4. Regularly inspect facility, grounds and equipment to assess needed cleaning, repair and maintenance.
5. Supervise and perform facility and grounds related cleaning, care, repair and maintenance to include the following:

a. Daily, regular and ongoing seasonal cleaning inside the school to include:

  • Doors, mats, windows and blinds
  • Common area walls and floors
  • Classrooms, desks, and chairs

b. Daily, regular and ongoing seasonal cleaning of the outside grounds up to the city/county right of way including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas to include:

  • Doors, windows, entry ways and gutters
  • Trash, yard and other manageable debris removal.
  • Routine inclement weather safety tasks (i.e. snow and ice removal, deicing, etc.)
  • Play area grounds and equipment safety and maintenance
  • Graffiti removal

c. Light trades maintenance and repairs to include:

  • Plumbing (repairing toilets and sinks)
  • Carpentry (repairing walls, floors, locks, hinges, blinds and windows)
  • Painting
  • Electrical (replacing light bulbs)
  • Miscellaneous (moving furniture and materials, etc.)

6. Address all matters hazardous to staff, students and family safety and communicate such matters to building administrator. This includes any major vandalism, damage or the need for major repairs to school building, grounds or property.
7. Perform daily routine cleaning duties including sweeping, dusting, mopping, buffing, scrubbing, sanitizing, vacuuming, laundering, etc.
8. Administer a key-control system for the school building.
9. Requisition custodial supplies and equipment and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
10. Assume responsibility for the daily opening and closing of school buildings.
11. Provide training in safety, use of hazardous materials, use of equipment, custodial methodology, etc.
12. Confer with building principal and facilities manager regarding care and cleaning programs for the school building.
13. Respond to alarm calls when building is not in use and change alarm codes if needed at the direction of administration.
14. Participate in in-service programs as assigned and request additional training as needed to ensure knowledge, skills and abilities are current to carry out the essential duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian.
15. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information.
16. Understand and follow safety requirements and procedures for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and for working with and around asbestos and electrical equipment.
17. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. 21 years of age or older
3. Possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid card
4. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
5. Valid Oregon Driver's License
6. Limited Maintenance Industrial/Electrical License (preferred)
